I tried to make a new thread but it said error and wasn't sure if it was a technical problem or if newbs weren't allowed to go flooding the boards right off the bat

But yes, thank you. You seem to have been here for quite a while. Have you had much luck in find local people? I'm sort of using this site as a way to meet new people, in hopes of creating a social life for myself

You can't make a new thread yet with how new you are, so...it happens.

I've met new people, just not in person. New internet friends. And I'm a married dude with 4 kids...all under the age of 6. I don't get out that much My Mrs likes to joke we're on dates when we go to the grocery store without some of the kids...

Haha... I totally can relate to counting grocery trips as dates, and I can't tell if it's just my relationship with food in general, or the actual relationship with my boyfriend itself.
Blah - I live in HC and don't drive, so... I definitely appreciate every moment I do get to go out.

Don't drive, eh? That can make the whole expanding ones social life difficult.

Since you live in HoCo, may I suggest checking into a) MAGFest in January 2015 - http://magfest.org/ - Lots of video games (console, arcade, PC, etc) as well as board gaming plus geeky musical acts; b) Otakon in July 2015 - https://www.otakon.com/ - Anime convention right in Baltimore City. I haven't been in years, but I remember going and it was lots of fun. Last time I went (2004), I was dressed as Lupin III

Oh boy. I went to Otakon for the first time (ever) this year. It was amazing. I did go with lots of money. :p I spent most of it. But I have so many cool things to help me remember all the fun it was, so no regrets here.

I often look around online for events to go to. I heard about Katsucon that will be around in January. It is kind of early for me since I just found out about it, like, a few days ago. I told myself that I'd cosplay the next time I went to an anime convention. Also, I'd never wish going alone to one of those things on anyone, unless you're a social magnet - haha, which I'm not

Thanks for all this free info though!

I'm keeping my eye out for other conventions - I heard there's a Scifi one sometime.

I was super close to cosplaying for Otakon this year.. I had plenty of time, but 3 months before Otakon was to be I got cold feet. Man, I tell you, when I realized how carefree the atmosphere was at a chaotic place like that.. I realized the mistake I had made lol

I remember spending quite a bit at Otakon, but that was a long time ago and, honestly, I don't have all the stuff I had gotten back then. I wish my Canti from FLCL action figure never broke years ago. It was so cool. I do, however, still have my copy of the FLCL sound track. My copy of Battle Royale I bought then, tho, has disappeared on me. But, that's another story.

Anyways...

Katsucon is actually in mid-February: http://www.katsucon.org/ - So, you have more time if you're interested in going. Maybe not a lot of time to plan out a cosplay, unless you do a very basic one. So, there's that.

I'm also not a social magnet, but if I went to a convention, I'm not sure who I'd even go with. My Mrs isn't into anime. My kids are too little to take to something like that. And I don't have a lot of local friends into anime. Then again, what would I do at a convention? I'd probably see a few shows & spend most of my time buying stuff at the vendor halls. So...I don't need to be social for that

EDIT: I updated the OP to include the dates and details of some MD conventions. Mostly anime, but some sci fi ones too.

Battle Royale is a movie I like too.

Ah, my bad. Thanks for the correction. I guess that does mean I'd have a month more of time for cosplaying for Katsucon since it's actually in February, but then I'd have to rush. If I cosplay, I want it to be good I do care about what other think, but I am my biggest critic haha.

Well.. when I went to Otakon this year it was with my friend and boyfriend. They both are into anime, especially my friend, he's probably more into it than me and Jason combined. So we did all have a good time, although I did have to really get them to go with them both being hermits and all. As for my boyfriend, although he's into anime, he is very into staying home and playing video games. Asking him to come with me to Katsucon would be dumb since I'm sure he's all tapped out still from Otakon, and he also isn't really in a situation to splurge since he's out of a job for the time being.
All reasons Katsucon isn't in my cards this year, but that's okay.

As much as I had fun at Otakon and do plan to attend again, even next year if possible, I wasn't really sure what I should be doing. It was exciting going over the manual for all the events that would be going on, but when it came down to it.. it was a lot of watching anime, or a class to learn about something. I think I spent most of my time there just walking around and looking at all that I could see, which was a total blast. The sellers market was so cool.
I feel that going to a convention for me is more of a social and spending time with people, even meeting some new ones. If I had cosplayed.. I could of done all that I did except feeling cool the entire time

So... what did we learn? Conventions shouldn't be seen as a place to meet people. Gah.
