Is It Bad To Like Things that Are Wish Fulfillment or Lowbrow
Posted 12/19/14 , edited 12/19/14
I have a hatred of NGNL, which is obviously a wish fullfilment fantasy, but I wonder, is that a good reason to hate an anime? I see people throwing words like "low brow" and "wish fulfillment", but it seems to me to be sort of snobby, a way to denigrate stories you don't like without any actual fair criticisms included. Like, "I don't like the Hunger Games because it is aimed at teenagers."

Hating it because it is so isn't correct. If you like good stories in anime and it is the main draw for you, you may more than likely dislike many wish fulfillment shows.

To answer the topic title - no it isn't bad. People that like that just seek a different thing from anime. Without naming the title, I recently talked to a friend about one of our shared guilty pleasures. It is in my top 10 anime, but as a piece of literature it is easily the worst of the 10. As raw entertainment, it is easily in my top 3. It gives me exactly what I have wanted to see in anime and the story telling is shaped to that and it is perfectly fine. I'd hope I am not a bad person just for enjoying a show like that.

You edited while I wrote --- yes it is snobby for those throwing the words out there, but just ignore those people if you like something. That's what I do for THAT anime.

I like a lot of the anime I like because it has cute characters. No shame in my game.

First off, I dont hate NGNL, I just dont get the hype around it.
For a Comedy, I didn't think it was that funny.
For an adventure story, it didn't have great world building.
It reminds me a lot of SAO and Avatar (blue people, not elemental mages), in that: if you are into that kind of thing, meaning you really like the concept of the story, its the coolest thing ever, if not, its sort of average at best.

To answer the question, those kinds of reasons for dislikeing something are a bit of a cop-opt. To me, it seems like they're saying "I don't like this, but I can't find an actual reason that I don't" there's nothing wrong with that, but its generaly better to have a reason to back you up before you say something like that.

Emily Dickinson said it best when she said "the heart wants what the heart wants". Each person has thier own likes and dislikes. Some will judge you for them others will accept them. If a genre isn't your type it just means you've seen enough of that genre to know it's not subject matter you'd enjoy. Obviously those people you mention have speciic dislikes to what they perceive as "low brow" or "wish fullfillment" anime.

The only thing I will say is if you only worry about others opinions on a subject you could someday miss out on having your own. Don't live your life for what others think is good or bad make your own choices on whether you like something or not. To this day I still hate Titanic despite millions upon millions of people saying how great a movie it is .

I read your review on NGNL, and I thought it was bull's eyes spot on. that's how I feel about the anime, I thought I was the only one who can see the flaws.

These geeks wish they were Sora or Kirito.

To answer your question, no it isn't bad. but people should differentiate between fantasy and reality.... in reality, geeks/shut-ins don't usually get recognised or loved by women.

The answer is a resounding no. Tastes are quite different and everybody has a different opinion on things. Just as long as you don't impose an extreme view like this on others then it's all good. That's where things get into the not alright zone. You can hate stuff for whatever reason you want, but just make sure you give things a fair chance before it is said with absolute certainty.

For all its cheese, I totally love reverse harem stuff. I happily pony up to pay for more Voltage game routes when they're on sale, despite the fact that the men aremore or less repeats of their other characters already in use in other games. But they're entertaining, so I'm fine with it.

As has already been said in this thread, as long as you can differentiate between fantasy and reality, it's fine.

Nope. Just opinions. Like you have your own opinions on NGNL, I have mine.

You know, people keep saying that, but is it really that big of a problem? I mean, unless you have some hardcore mental illness, I don't think there are that many people who truly can't distinguish between fantasy and reality.

good point. i write, and my charicters are real to me. as in, people who live some where else. i know its fiction, but its still real to me. i talk about them like they are real. they feel real to me. even tho i know they are not.

its hard to describe.
