About a week ago, I got a phone call from my brother-in-law saying that he found out that his wife liked anime and they were wanting to watch something together. He has never watched anime before because he was a bit too old for the target audiences of the Digimon, Pokemon, and Yugioh invasion. He was under the impression that anime was "kids stuff"

In general, his movie tastes are horror/slasher, western, and action films. His wife is into Sailor Moon and tried Attack on Titan on Netflix, but did not like it.

I am thinking that their genre interests my be too different for them to find something to watch together, but maybe some of you may be able to help.

Full Metal Alchemist. (the original one)

Honestly, I can't think of one that appeals to a greater audience, (it's got humor, it's got serious topics. Not quite fantasy, not quite scifi), and the character development is excellent, and it's got a good plot.

If he can make it through ten episodes of that, it'll be good.

Also, cowboy bebop and Trigun are nice western style anime titles. I lean more for Bebop.

EDIT: and yes, I know they're all old, but they're classics for a reason. Today's newest releases just don't have anything that I think hits on all the higher notes of what an anime series can be.

I have Cowboy Bebop on my personal list to watch, since I haven't watched yet...but also have it on the list to start them on along with Trigun.

We first recommended FMA to them, but am not sure if that one stuck or not. We haven't heard for sure yet.

I would recommend one of the shounen series. Hunter x Hunter 2011 (this is one of my favorite shows, the chimera ant arc is fanfuckingtastic) people might get on my case for the other too, but bleach and naruto.

Uhm, I would also recommend something like Steins;Gate or Ghost in the shell as both of those deal with mature themes and are very well executed, in both direction and story.

Just show her what you enjoy.

Stein's Gate is a yes. GITS might be dull for the wife. HunterxHunter, and Bleach both might reinforce the "kids" stereotype.

you clearly have not seen HxH then. It has one the darkest and most grim arcs of any shounen. The Chimera ant arc.

Bleach also has some pretty dark themes.

skip beat, bakuman( not so sure about this ), hataraku maou-sama, isshuukan friends / one week friends, Kimi ni Todoke, ouran highschool host club, tamako market, usagi drop( not sure they'll like the manga though).
these are non-action animes that i hope the pair of them will enjoy.

It's not about the "darkness". It's about the complexity of stories. Naruto, bleach, fairy tail,DBZ, even Rurouni Kenshin are off of the same vein where it's "fight big bad guy, lose, train for a bajillion episodes, then fight big bad guy, win, two episodes to celebrate, meanwhile the next big bad guy that's stronger than previous big bad guy makes an appearance" cycle that goes on every 26 or so episodes ad infinitum.

It's not going to get you invested in a story, and it's not going to interest someone older.

As a somewhat older person, I'd say that depends on the viewer I never really got into Naruto or Fairy Tail, but enjoyed much of Bleach, DBZ, Kenshin, and HxH. Started some of those while far younger, started some of them more recently.

I also always suggest some older anime in threads like this - Slayers, El Hazard, Record ofLodoss War, etc are quite enjoyable in my opinion. They all have fantasy elements, and Lodoss especially is easy for RPG fans to follow, because of its origins.
