You see last week in my schools weekly anime club me and my friend where arguing over which anime has more influence over the shouen genre. Me being a huge DBZ fan said DBZ and my friend disagreed has he believed that naruto is more influential in the shouen genre compared to DBZ. I honestly believe that DBZ is more influential than Naruto because its been able to not only withstand the test of time but shape the shouen genre as a whole. I wanted to know if I'm just being being bias like my friend said or if my argument holds some truth like i believe.

They're both influential. Let's just leave it at that.

I don't know which has more influence nowadays, but as to which has HAD more influence, it's DBZ no questions asked. Its been popular since 1985 and has completely shaped the genre from the ground up. Naruto merely rode the wave.

Both of them are really. Like you said DBZ mainly shaped the Shounen genre. But Naruto added all the philosophy and friendship stuff. Either way it's not really worth arguing about. In a way all Shounen anime influence the genre. Same holds true for practically every genre.

Probably DBZ seeing how Kishimoto was influenced by Toriyama. DBZ also had all these cryptic messages that we didn't notice as kids. Like when Goku let Vegeta live after he killed off his friends, that allowed them to become best friends at the end of the series. That's probably saying forgiveness can bring good things, no matter how hard it is to forgive. Something like that..ya feel?

Depends on the metrics.

Influential in getting kids into anime? both. DBZ for older fans, Naruto for newer.
Influential on the genre: DBZ
Influential to pop culture: DBZ

I mean, you can sit that and try to define who was more influential in what terms, but simply put, without DBZ, there would have never been naruto. The only influence Naruto has had has been to get more of the current new anime converts to join. And unlike DBZ, where there really wasn't much else similar, Bleach, Fairy Tail, etc. all have solid fandoms that have converted masses as well.

Both are pretty retarded series in my opinion.

I started with movies.
