How Do You Feel About the Defrosting of Relations Between Cuba and the USA?
Posted 12/23/14
How do you feel about it? I was thinking "about time", but I don't know the specifics.

Don't care one way or the other. 50 years of cold shoulder seems adaquet for the missile crisis.

I'm glad, but 50 years for an attack that never happened, and not much for one we actually carried out..

Just saying.

I feel a little bad for this, but all I can think is: "How long will it be before they screw it up again?"

I'm fine with it. I think, however, there's been other motivations towards keeping it in place for 20+ years after the cold war ended (mainlyeconomic reasons for us and not saying they were good ones)

It needed to be done. The embargo did not have the desired effect.

I look forward to the imminent demystification of the quality of the Cuban cigar industry. Sorry to rain on parades, but there's nothing special about them. The stuff we get from the Dominican Republic is comparable or superior in terms of quality.

Also having them available here will likely add more competition to the market, which is always great news for the pockets of consumers.

I guess all my feelings concerning this revolve around cigars...

Opening diplomatic channels is a positive first step in what will hopefully be a broader improvement of diplomatic and economic relations. Slow and steady is the name of the game as far as lifting the embargo is concerned (mostly to prevent the sort of social and economic destabilization witnessed in several transitioning former SSRs and satellites), but it's certainly something which needs to happen if at all possible.

In addition to providing a major boon to the Cuban people on either side of the border a better relationship between the US and Cuba puts one of Russia's diplomatic chess pieces in a grey area which could one day become a complete loss thereof. That's kind of a cold way to look at it, but it is true.

Edit: I'm getting the sense that people are thinking the embargo has been lifted. It hasn't. The President can and has loosened some restrictions on financial transactions and communications, but the embargo was eventually signed into law and cannot be unilaterally lifted by the President.

Dialogue with Cuba is a good thing. 50 years for an embargo is long enough. The world now and the geopolitical landscape is far different then it was back then.

Ultimately though, as BlueOni noted, its just political maneuvering by Obama to take Cuba out of Russias equation for his new cold war fight he decided to pick.

Also, corporations are lining up to start plucking dollars out of the pockets of the 10 million or so Cubans there are down there. In the end everything Obama does is to the benefit of his corporate masters. people everywhere are just cattle and money trees. Congress wont lift the embargo immediately since it will take a while to grease the right palms and let the lobbyists draft convoluted cleverly written legislation but it will happen eventually..
