I guess from a certain surface level view I can see how one could think they're similar but once you get into them they're really their own breeds (so to speak), which fits the whole idea behind "Simpson's did it" (South Park reference). I'm a fan of both and wouldn't consider trying to say which is better. I relate more to Ken Kaneki but other than that I'd suggest for anyone to read and/or watch both.

Even at the surface, I don't even think they're that similar. One is in a apocalyptic setting with giants trying to eat everyone and the other is ghouls trying to survive in a normal human society that's completely against them. That's not similar at all haha.

I meant more in the aspects of a) the 'not strongest male' lead (which irks some people but I personally love) that has to adjust to something new and b) the male lead becoming something inhuman and how he reacts to it. Other than that though I think they lose connections and truly are their own stories, with both being great series.

Alright so you've got a manga that looks like it's been drawn by a schizophrenic toddler and an anime that is more or less a black screen half the time. Tokyo Ghoul anime sucked hard. AoT manga sucks hard. In the end, both suck and were overhyped.

Go watch Parasyte. Knights of Sidonia, Shingeki no Bahamut, Broken Blade (movies and for the love of all that is holy read the manga), Evangelion (series and movies), Zankyou no Terror or The UNLIMITED Hyobu Kyousuke. These are all somewhat similar to Tokyo Ghoul or AoT (some post apocalyptic like AoT or deal with a group of people against the world like Tokyo Ghoul) and are better than both Tokyo Ghoul or AoT.

manga wise I'd say Tokyo Ghoul... honestly as a manga reader the current chapters of SNK is just horrible! I dunno how they plan to adapt that crap without boring the watchers to death.

attack on titan, duh...

in a term of anime.. yes

i think because after i watched the 1st episode of AoT, i cant wait to watch the next one and i ended up finish watching the series in just two days... while tokyo ghoul.. after i have watched the 1st episode, i have no urge to watch the next episode and just 'yeah i'll watch the 2nd episode tomorrow.. or the day after tomorrow idk, based on my mood'. it seems tokyo ghoul doesnt get me hooked that hard.. lol

but i don't like the manga of AoT... i can't stand the horrible art even though it's getting better each chapter but still... i'd just stick with anime i guess. while tokyo ghoul... i haven't even touched the manga so yeah idk.. lol

i have now watched both, still say AoT. it has a much greater "shock" factor and tbh i thought TG was just kinda "eh, ok, nothing new here" until the last episode of the first season when the MC went all "i'm gonna kick yer butt and look super awesome while doing so" . whereas in snk i was all, "holy crap what" in almost every episode... and AoT has a much greater cast, not just in size but in presentation. i mean i can tell you the names of all the characters in AoT but i don't even remember the MC's name in TG etc etc.

though i don't think they are similar in any way as OP suggests other than some blood n gore and , you know, monsters trying to eat erebody, they're very different... I do like both however.

I have watched both seasons of SNK and the first season of Tokyo Ghoul. I haven't read the manga of either, so my opinion is based solely on my impression of the animes.

I think that because of their darker natures (as far as animes go), both shows usually get lumped together, although they each reside in their own genres respectively.

Personally, Tokyo Ghoul was a much more enjoyable show to watch, and made me really want to root for the MC - it seems like much more development occurs in TG (plot-wise and character-wise). The animation was great and was overall pretty fun. I haven't seen the second season yet, and I'm waiting for it to finish so I can watch it all in one go, lol.

The first season of SNK was better than the second season. I was really looking forward to the second one, but it got tiring really fast. The same sort of thing happened over and over again - some side character dies, people get discouraged, something happens and their morale is up, but then a bunch of other faceless people die.... the cycle repeats over and over again. I thought Eren would be in super training mode with Levi but that didn't happen...it was overall a very frustrating watch. I felt like they especially forced the last arc down your throat.
SNK is definitely overrated. Parts which could have been emphasized more were simply ignored while other events were unnecessarily stretched for episodes at a time.

Unlike TG, SNK tested my patience...I am pretty happy leaving them in their own universe fighting off those monsters for who knows how long. Tokyo Ghoul had great animation, and left me wanting more!

AoT, cuz its on another league of its own. i had the same feeling watching this show as i have the first time i saw dbz, naruto, onepiece, bleach, sao, or any of the titles that are considered to be the top ranking of its time.

tokyo ghoul is awesome, but it doesn't feel completed or rather it feels directionally undefined. basically it has all the power in the world to be watever it wants, but that can easily be screwed up and there is no sign that it has succeeded either.

From my personal preference: TG = SnK

But manga-quality wise: TG > SnK
I gave the TG manga 8/10 and the SnK manga 5/10. The TG manga did a good job in developing its world and characters-- it also had great art. SnK manga on the other hand... Everything about it is mediocre, be it characters, art or story.

Anime quality-wise however: SnK > TG
Both were mediocre in all honesty, because I rated TG anime 5.5/10 and the SnK anime 5.8/10. However, TG anime is hard to understand and felt rushed, and its characters aren't well developed as they are in the manga, and its censorships can be a bit jarring at times. While the SnK anime lacks character development and is incomplete, it had good animation and we're at least able to understand what's going on.

I agree that both were overhyped; there are better animes out there, and I respect your opinion. But I mostly disagree with your post, for some reasons:
- AoT manga had bad art =/= It sucks
- TG anime had a lot of censorships =/= It sucks
- AoT manga sucks =/= The whole AoT franchise sucks
- TG anime sucks =/= The whole TG franchise sucks

Just saying. Well, correct me if you feel something wrong.
