Firstly, I am sorry for the generic thread which you guys must see 20 times a month. I have tried to avoid it by searching through the forums, but it is a big place!

Anyway... I am new to Anime, having only ever watched Pokemon, Digimon, Monster Rancher and Dragonball as a child. However randomly, after 10 years, I came across a series called Code Geass which I decided to buy and watch.

It was ridiculously good, in my opinion.

Now, thanks to my addictive nature, I can't get enough anime! Unfortunately though, I don't know where to begin.

Can anyone give some good recommendations, which are both on and off crunchyroll (on is better)? I'm not necessarily looking for a trendy show (although I have started Attack on Titan), but I would like to explore the genre.

I think what I'm asking is, if I were to join Anime 101, what would the first semester contain?

I'd really be grateful for any help you guys could offer.

If anyone mentions "Boku no Pico," Do Not touch it It's for your health.
As for recommendations, maybe BTOOOM! for action. For comedy/action (when it get there), Gintama, keep in mind that it's slow at the start which turns people off.

Full Metal Alchemist / Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood -
---They are the same show for about 10-20 episodes but then different for the last 50 or so because of reasons. Both are great though.

Cowboy Bebop

Samurai Champloo

Baccano

Hunter x Hunter (2011)
--- There is a 1998 version and it is really good but the 2011 version is basically the same thing but better.

Gurren Lagan

Magi

Death Note
--- You might like this if you liked Code Geass. The main character is like Lelouche except actually evil. This is one of the few animes with a protagonist that is actually evil, I don't mean misunderstood like Lelouche, this guy is a total douchebag, but he's a genius.

Durarara

Gintama
---Possibly the funniest anime in the world.

-----
What I have listed above are a lot of main stream shows that deserve being popular. There are a few people who may not like them but they are all very solid shows.

Here are a few shows not all that popular but still very solid:

Space Brothers - A more realistic show about training to be an astronaut

Planetes - A show about living in space in the late 21st century.

Last Exile - A show about sky pirates and airplane races.

Silver Spoon - A show about farming.

This is a very solid list to be honest and you would do well watching any of the shows in the first first half anyway. They are pretty generic "Hey you are new to anime watch these shows" Death Note is probably a good bet because you liked Code Geass. I would probably add Trigun, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Steins Gate, Fate Zero, and Clannad just as some of the greatest of all time in Anime. I could give you more specific suggestions tailored to your likes if you tell me a bit about what you like.

What? Have you ever seen Oreimo? That is a really solid show if you go into it with an open mind.

Here's a quick list for you then:

Monogatari franchise - you start with Bakemonogatari, then Nekomonogatari black, then Nisemonogatari, then Nekomonogatari white, then Monogatari second season, then the upcoming Tsukimonogatari
Sword Art Online
Puella Magi Madoka Magica - don't judge this show by how it looks
Fate/Stay Night - there's the old adaptation and the new adaptation both cover different stories
Fate/Zero - prequel of Fate/Stay Night
Angel Beats!
Anohana
Steins Gate
Kill la Kill
Love Live!

I'd just like to inform you though that I don't rate all of these shows highly... there are easily other shows that I've enjoyed more than some of the titles in there. That list is primarily a list of the most popular shows in recent years. I figure it's a good idea to give you a list of popular shows instead of my preference so you can at least recognize and discuss this titles when they are brought up for discussion.

I tried to stay away from shows that tend to be excessively 'anime-ish' if that makes any sense. By Anime-ish I mean they tend to heavily rely on those weird romantic / perverted tropes like incest, bloody noses, childhood friends, tsunderes, etc. I've noticed that stuff is generally the deep end of anime and is usually what makes people who aren't familiar with anime shy away from it.

The stuff I listed more or less keeps away from those heavy otaku fetishes. Don't get me wrong I enjoy those things myself, but at the same time it feels like recommending porn to someone.

Plenty of other solid shows. I tell him no. You tell him yes. He does as he likes. And we all must dance.

Yeah I understand what you are saying and it isn't a bad list at all, I just wanted to augment it with a few of my own suggestions. If you introduce someone to anime you don't want to throw them into the deep end right away with shows like Bakemonogatari or Gurren Lagann. Which I am now noticing is on your list lol, I am not sure about that show fitting your criteria. Also I would like to add Psycho Pass to my list of suggestions.

depressedlover - Thanks for the warning! I like my health!

xxJing - Woah, thank you very much! Your list will be my homework :)

severticas - Maybe I'll just stay away from all sibling relationships o.O

lfierce - I've come across Fate Zero on this site. I'll add it to my queue! As for what I like, I tend to go for the character driven shows, with enough plot twists to keep me interested. Action is a bonus. :)

MartianMage - Thanks for this. I think you're right about the popular stuff. A quick google tells me that Sword Art Online looks promising, as do the others!

nemoskull - No sparkles. Instant plus.

maffayoo - That pretty much has my name all over it. Thank you! I should have thought, when it doubt - youtube! Having watched part of the video already - hilarious!

Thank you for the help, everyone. It's very kind of you all. I'm grateful. :)
