QTAC - Added to the queue! It had me at ‘cursed power’!

BlueOni- That sounds fun! I think Code Geass has to be my favourite. It's very character driven, and has many a plot twist. If I had to rank the others, it would go Digimon, Monster Rancher, Dragonball and then Pokemon - in that order. I feel like pokemon may be a bit too predictable, so I probably wouldn't enjoy it today.

If I can compare anime to what I look for in comics, it's all about the characters, and the surprising/shocking moments. Magic/powers is also fun. If you can make something out of that mess of a profile, you are a miracle worker ^^!

First never listen to people say to avoid something. Best way to know whether you'll like it or not is by watching it yourself even if it's just a couple of episodes. Anyway since you said you like character driven series with plot twists I have some good recommendations for you:

Little Busters! and Refrain (on crunchyroll)
Kanon (not on crunchyroll)
Air (not on crunchyroll)
Clannad and Afterstory (not on crunchyroll)
Myself; Yourself (on crunchyroll)
(And regarding Little Busters and Clannad, it should be noted that both their second seasons Refrain and Afterstory respectively make the shows as good as they are and so don't miss out on them).

And as for the magic stuff:
Magi (on crunchyroll)
Fairy tail (on crunchyroll)

(Also let me know if you meant any kind of special powers and not just magic)

I mention the Ghost in the Shell franchise because it's different from 99% of what's been listed here. It's a solid example of what anime can be and it's a genre that is very underrepresented these days.

Which gets me into what I'm going to say: DON'T Stick with what you know. As a new inductee, it's easy this day and agew to stick with a particular genre and never leave it. What made me enjoy anime so much was the incredible diversity that was in the medium. AND you asked to be schooled on what anime can be.

- I agree that full metal alchemist is a must, but I say all you need is the original. Brotherhood is also excellent, but it's ALMOST watching the same story twice. So go with the better of the two.

- Neon Genesis is also fantastic. but I'd replace it with Rah Xephon. And toss in a macross or Gundam series of your choice.

- Madoka Magika is also ideal for an idea of what a subversion of a genre can be, but watch Sailor Moon to understand the magical girl genre first. (then if you like magika, go for selector infected WIXOSS as well)

- Kino no Tabi is another good title, and hits a different genre

- Tokyo Ghoul rounds out horror nicely. Also pick up Another, and Mononoke Each is its own horror. Mononoke is serial stories, but it's got a LOT of japanese historical influence. It's very unique.

- Tokyo Grandfathers or Paprika should be watched. That will give you something in movie format, and the visuals/ story telling are incredibly important. Scratch that. Millenium Actress. The story telling is fluid, it's full of imagination, fantastic visuals. It is very definitive of that particular director's works and won many awards. And he's the antithesis of miyazaki, whom you should also watch at least one film from. Spirited Away would probably be the easiest to watch for a new fan.

- You'll need something from the harem genre as well. Anyone got any suggestions? I want to say to love ru, or Cat girl cuties, or, (really, I want to go back to the original: Tenchi Muyo, but that's not really interesting to anyone but old fars like me. Thing is, I can figure out a "definitive" harem title)

- For its unusual style, both artistic and story telling I want to recommend Katanagatari.

- For a lost genre of "teacher who turns a classroom of punks into the best students EVAR" - you must see GTO.

- I hated it, but also watch Shigurui. It covers a completely different style and genre.

- Here's where I'm going to get shit: Panty Stocking and Garterbelt. I left it till now, because if you've been reading what I've suggested, you can understand that this is essential an intro to the perverted joke and really horrible junk food crap that anime can sometimes be. It's got to be watched to appreciate other stuff.

- Instead of Blood C, I do agree with xxxholic, And Chobits. This will teach you CLAMP

-Fate/Stay Night - everyone raves about it, and it will introduce you to TypeMOON

- Akira (everyone references akira, everyone knows akira, it cannot be avoided)

- Hidamari Sketch or Minami -ke. Both are slice of Life. I loved HS, but Minami-ke is FAR more digestible, where HS will put you to sleep at times. (but HS isa completely different art form and style and based on 4 panel comic strips, so... at least try to watch 3 epis of it)

- Ben-To and Yakitate. Japan's food is SERIOUS BUSINESS and they will fucking kill you for a riceball or spend years obsessing over a loaf of fucking bread... Ok, not really, but that's kind of the plot to those two titles, and somehow, it needs to be watched to understand something indescribable about anime.

EDIT: SHIT! I forgot Romance. Toradora and Clannad would need to be watched to cover those as well.

I would also suggest Shion no Ou. It's about a game, and it covers an excellent mystery. it an probably do well for two genres.

I think that would probably get you exposed to the widest variety out there, and possibly something from both the past and present(ish)

hello, as an avid watcher my self and fellow sufferer of this "addiction" (i see it a blessing really hahaha) i would love to be of assistance.

Now, I know a bunch of people are going to post their favorite show or the ones they think are best, and some that really are THE BEST.
But honestly as u pointed out, ur looking at anime 101, though i would say Code Geass is REALLY good anime and a tough act to follow with normal means, your still gonna wanna save the BEST till like anime 404 advance class, so you can really see their greatness hahaha.

My advice to you is start small, look for the really popular stuff that was on toonami or adult swim like: "cowboy bebop", "gundam Wing", "trigun", "Ghost in the Shell" etc. these are all pretty good shows that are not TOO anime(but if u watch them later, they can be "meh" at times and cant stand toe to toe with truly amazing anime, depending on your tastes, of course)

another thing is to watch the big Shonen show that dominate the market. they might not be very good, you may love them or hate them. but if its something you like (you did mention dragonball which falls in to that category, especially if you mean "Z") the big ones are Naruto(manga just ended, so the anime will end soon enough), Bleach(anime is over/ on Hiatus till the manga gets further), and one piece.

lastly, try and find/think of a genre you may like (romance, action, slice of life, mystery, horror etc) and look up some popular ones and try them out. or you could CR to try a few and see what clicks. test some of the on going shows on the front page (winter is starting soon so its a good time to look into them).

hopefully this all makes sense and help you on your journey into anime and makes for a successful anime 101.
unfortunatly, this is really basic and these now way to convey everything in a single post, so if you can think of specific stuff you want out of anime or things you like or have any questions at all, feel free to pm me and ill be happy to help happy hunting!!

DISCLAIMER: sorry if i said anything that offended someones taste or favorite animes. i tried to be as non bias and as informative as possible, and ment no ill will. also sorry if its a bit long...

Hunter x Hunter (2011)
--- There is a 1998 version and it is really good but the 2011 version is basically the same thing but better.

Gintama
---Possibly the funniest anime in the world.

I agree with most of the list besides HunterxHunter and Gintama not because there bad, but because of length Hunterx Hunter is 148 episodes (not the most by a long shot but still a hefty investment) and Gintama is like 264 plus some movies. It's not necessarily that you can't or shouldn't recomend them it but I would certainly put a disclaimer on the length so they know what they're getting into.

General I would recomend anyone watch these

Fullmetal Alchemist- It's what got me into anime and I would recomend the first series since it is a bit older and would be more diffucult to watch after you've seen brotherhood than than the other way around. These are the show that anime 101 would contain

Ghost in the Shell- The movie is pretty good but the T.V series Stand alone complex is amazing

Stein's Gate- It's a bit slow at times especially the begining but it develops into a fantastic show about time travel

Parasyte- New this season and only half over it is already really good its also on crunchyroll

Attack on Titan- Though I am personally not a big fan it is undeniably a good show and certainly an Important one,

Trigun- Watch if you like westerns even if you don't it is really good

From here on is a couple categories and I only included stuff on crunchyroll (beside clannad) though they are all fantasic series but not necasarilly in anime 101

Romance

Clannd/kanon/air- The kyoto animation/key works are probably the best startting point and imo Clannad>Kanon>Air not on Crunchyroll but good enough to recomend anyways and would very likely be in anime 101

Ano natsu de matteru- A romance anime with some sci-fi elements but the main focus is certainly on the characters

Romcom

Toradora/golden time- Both are for the same creator. Toradora is set in High school while golden is in college they both have a decent mix of comedy and humor. Imo Toradora>Goldentime. Torada may be in anime 101 because there is a mountain of this type of show and it sit atop that mountain.

Slice-of-life (slow paced series with little plot and a focus on charters.

Hanasaku Iroha- It about running an Inn and follows a the staff of said Inn. Might be in anime 101 since slice of life is certainly a huge portion of anime and this is near the top

Comedy

Squid Girl- About a quid girl that set out to invade the world but never manages to get farther than the beach it is pretty good,

The series that would be in anime 101 for comedy is Azumange daih no doubt

Drama-

Anohana- This series is somehwhat like a shorter version of clannad that isn't a romance it is only eleven episodes and it is quite emotional I would certainly recomend this one heavily. It might not beat clannad in overall dram but it has little to no focus on romance so it maybe a better example of pure drama

Harem

Strike the blood- it is not as well know as many on this list but it has some great action, the lead doesn't suck and it avoids alot of the pitfalls of the genre. It also has a good plot and many of them do not. Certainly would not be in anime 101 but is still a great series

Others that I don't agree with

Bakemonogatari- This series is text heavy and I would probably not watch it until you have seen a decent chunk of other show also some of the fan service might be off putting though it is a pretty good series I certainly would only make a tenative recomendation. Would be in a more advanced class period like anime 303 or some such

Madoka Magica- I would only recomend this if you have atleast some knowlegde of magical girls tropes since that is what it is subverting and you would probably get more out of it, Basically watch this after you have watched a more normal magical girl show. It would never ever be in anime 101 since you would have to know about normal magical girl shows to understand it's subverion of the genre
