You don't have to watch Madoka Magica as a subversion. You don't need to understand at all what it is trying to subvert. It's like you're saying that the only reason to watch Madoka Magica is simply because it is a subversion.

You watch it simply because it is a good show. Gen Urobuchi himself said that he never intended to make PMMM a subversion... all he wanted to do was to make an interesting and thought provoking show and it is. PMMM didn't become popular because it is a subversion. It became hugely popular because it is a good show.

As a matter of fact you can read the reviews here on CR and you can see a lot of reviews claiming PMMM as their first magical girl show and they enjoyed it.

Fate Zero - my favorite anime of all time. It has one of the best animation i have ever seen on a anime show and good story telling. Just survive the first episode of the show.
Magi labyrinth of magic- Hard to explain but just watch it.
Boku no pico - ONE of greatest anime of all time. Its a must see anime. Amazing Fighting scenes, good art, epic main character, Amazing story line beyond human minds to comprehend, When you done with the first episode you will say wtf did I just watch. After this show you will question your own sexuality.
Jojo Bizarre adventure
Fate Stay night unlimited blade works
Psycho pass
One Piece
Bleach - Only the first 51 episode, because I consider the rest thrash.
School days- amazing story line of being inside of harem and the responsibility it comes having one.
Full metal alchemist brotherhood

I personally want to thank you for mentioning Monogatari and giving the way to watch it. I've been wanting to know which I start with.

Now for OP I recommend- Steins;Gate, Baccano, Fate Zero, Spice and Wolf, Shiki, Serial Experiments Lain, Haibane Renmai, Madoka Magica, Kids on the Slope, Trigun, Kino's Journey, Eureka Seven, School Rumble, Anohana, Bamboo Blade, and Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo

Recommendations of ones I'm currently watching- Gurren Lagann, Terror in Resonance, Kyousougiga, Arakawa Under the Bridge, and Kill la Kill

NP. That's the order in which the animated series was released. Although I forgot to mention that Bakemonogatari has about 3 episodes that aren't here on CR. Reason for that is the original animated series only aired 12 episodes... and the final 3 was only a webcast. Not sure where to find the other 3 episodes but I'm sure they're not here on CR.

I havent been watching anime long but I became interested because one of my friend was talking about fairy tail and I got hooked. I then stumbled on Reborn, its funny but as time goes on the show gets better. Everyone has there opinion of what they feel is good or bad but i recommend that you watch a little of everything and then you will see what you like.

Here are my picks:
Bleach
fairy tail
golden times
Gifu Dodo
ace of diamond
baby steps
hamatora
haikyu
There are so many more but these should get you started. You must find your own path in this exciting new adventure. ..

you mean hulu/netflix. (they're all there. I think Big O or Eureka 7 might be the only two you can't use hulu for)

True enough, I agree that you can enjoy the show on its own merits without knowing what it is subverting or understanding the subtext, there are plenty of shows were you cand do this and it doesn't reduce the enjoyment. But having the context and knowing the tropes could potential improve the enjoymen though not neccasirly. On I would point to that you need to know what it is subvert is nozaki-kun since the jokes would fall flat if you didn't know the context, they are certainly different beasts nozaki-kun is a comedy and madoka has a plot, but hopefully it does somewhat illustrate what I am trying to say

I also put it were I did because while this is a thread for recomendation, my post also came at it from the anime 101 angle. Madoka would probably not be taught first since they would build the groundworl then teach a subversion of it .

Princeblaster - I've been meaning to check Magi out. I see it all the time in manga form!

MartianMage - Ok psychological show has me all over it. Also, I've started to watch Death Note and so far enjoy it!

Shrapnel893 - Wise advice.

Xylrot - Ok my time on the internet tells me to stay away from anything tentacle related at all cost! Thanks for the heads up.

kdroberts - I fear it's already too late.

severticas - Liar Game sounds great! And Parasyte!

PeripheralVisionary - If the young'uns watch it, then I'll give it a shot!

edward9mm - Thank you for the tailored list. I really appreciate it. I think I'll make a note of everything you've mentioned.

demondog89 - Oh, that's handy mentioning the CR catalog - it makes it easier for me -- thanks!

applestash - Ok so Monster sounds like a must. And due to popular demand, Valvrave the Liberator (sounds a lot like Code Geass XD)!

Ryuouka - This one sounds odd. :S

dwilson2000 - You're right about trying episodes. I think that's what I am going to do with the recommendations. Yours included. They all sound pretty interesting.

serifsansserif - well your post is incredibly helpful! Thank you! I think GITS sounds awesome and I really want to try it out.

grimbonez - That's a really smart approach, and fits the anime 101 theme. I had no idea Code Geass was so popular when I stumbled upon it. But then, after watching, I can see why.

Brizent - Oh man, 264 plus episodes is hardcore! Maybe I need to ease into that! As for your list, I've noticed Stein's Gate has come up quite a bit. Thanks for the warning about it being slow, though. I now know to stick with it! Also - thanks for the detailed list! I've saved it. :)

KnightmareFrame - Ha thank you for the list, and the breakdown of where to find things, particularly on google. XD

TomCraft - I might have to stay away from Boku no pico, due to prior warnings. They have scared me. The others though, particularly Magi labyrinth of magic, has me curious!

Ctonhunter - you've mentioned some new shows that others haven't before, Thank you for that!

nemoskull - The amount of warnings that come with this show. I don't think I'll ever be able to watch it!

ywonder - I noticed ace of diamond on CR and wanted to check it out! I'm glad someone has mentioned it! Thanks!

serifsansserif - I have hulu and netflix! Wahoo!

Also, very glad to see people are using this thread for similar reasons. :)

Thank you everyone for your help. I have a giant list to get me started! Now I just need to find the hours in the day, and I'm good to go!

Wahoo!
