I’m aware of all this. I see my application as a slightly enhanced port of the Android client to other platforms (not necessarily limited to Sailfish, thanks to Qt), so the plan was to mimic the official app as closely as possible.

How about a compromise: The source code that is released eventually (under a permissive license like ISC rather than GPL) does not include the parts that actually fetch data from Crunchyroll, instead replacing them with functions that merely return dummy data. That would allow open source contribution to the important bits of the app without disclosing any information that could be used to commit e.g. copyright infringement.

It goes without saying that the app prominently displays that it is unofficial and not supported by Crunchyroll in any way.

I also would prefer to see it remain premium only, as advertising revenue (and relationships) are also quite tricky without inside assistance.

Yeah, I’ve seen the interaction with third-party services (BlueKai, Tremor, Quantcast, GA) and the distinctions in how and when certain activities are tracked. It’s not hard to do, but I’ll put that on hold for now. Don’t want to cause any trouble messing with this.

I am also considering extending the app to desktop (Windows, Linux, potentially OS X) eventually and using mpv (libmpv) as the playback core there, which would allow playing streams much more smoothly and with higher quality than with the Flash player or any hypothetical HTML5 player (as browsers are completely incompetent at video playback).

I just wanted to tell you that my husband and I love this app. It works on our Samsung Galaxy S4's, our Samsung Tab S's, and our KDLinks Android-based media player so we can FINALLY watch Crunchyroll on our HD TV and have it look as beautiful as it should. Thank you!

It's amazing to see the creativity and ingenuity of our users, but I'd like to point out that there are a few concerns with publishing/using unofficial applications:

* There are some complicated rules around video launch windows and region/language availability -- most of this is handled on our servers, but the clients also play a small part

I'd also like to announce that we have an Android app update coming right around the corner which includes adaptive streaming and HD resolutions (if your network connection and device can support them).

I don't particularly see a problem with the app existing, but please do not publish it to the marketplace or release source code, and ensure that users do not expect support from Crunchyroll. I also would prefer to see it remain premium only, as advertising revenue (and relationships) are also quite tricky without inside assistance.

Keep on with your code skills chief, and apply to work with us one day

The thing with programming is that ETAs are almost NEVER accurate. Something will always come up to delay it. We can still hope though :D

And it is of course completely possible that the ETA was correct. Josh made it seem that most of the work was already done and it had to undergo some testing before being released to the public.

Soon.

Seriously though if the update happens before my subscription expires (next week) that will be just one more reason for me to renew it!

This appears to be a problem that cropped up recently:

Hi dude, after all let me say thanks for the app, is working fine on mi S4, but I have a problem on my android tv.
I'm having weird lines or pixels at the video, they look like dead pixel, but just happen with the app.
I tried with a mirroring from my S4 to my android tv, but the result was the same.

do you know why this is happening?

I hope you can give me an advice :)

My android tv is a VEGA S89-H

The app was never intended for use on a TV, I initially planned on developing a completely separate version for Android TVs but I am working on other projects right now. I use a library called Vitamio to play the video streams, so it's likely a problem with that, meaning I won't be able to fix it anytime soon :/
Its weird that it still does it when mirroring from your phone though. I'm not sure what's going on there...

Hopefully the official CR app update will come soon
