I started watching anime over 40 years ago when I was obsessed with Kimba the White Lion! Kimba was special because he was white & as a child my hair was white too (I had a fascist streak - I only played with kids with blonde hair until I was 5ish, so I only had 2 friends!) From Kimba I graduated to Astro Boy, and my Dad, who worked in Foreign Affairs started getting me manga from friends at the Japanese Embassy & took me to special screenings of anime that they had there for the staff!
I didn't see a whole lot in my teens since there was very little to be seen in Australia unless you had connections, and I had no-one to share it with. As anime became more accessible here, my interest grew, & now I wouldnt be without it - despite my advanced years & the attitude of my friends & family!! VIVE LA ANIME!!!

From the early 80s I was watching anime without really knowing that they're Japanese animation.

It wasn't until Ranma 1/2 that I knew anime for what anime was.

I don't even remember what got me into anime. I've pretty much been a fan since I was first made aware of its existence as a child. I didn't hear it referred to as "anime" back then, though, so I just assumed it was the same as the other cartoons. By the time I learned the difference.....my preferences were already well established.

Same thing for me (The Mysteries Cities Of Gold from 1980s). But, it was Dragonball Z that did it for me.

I have no idea what the first anime I watched was, it was way to long ago.
What got me into it though was the general level of absolute rubbish that was being shoved onto television channels.
Anime was (and still is) better written, more original and even at its most average, leagues ahead of mainstream TV.

When I was a kid growing up I used to always watch Pokemon and Dragonball Z in the mornings before going to school, but I didn't really get into anime until about 2 or 3 years ago when some of my mates at school were talking about different anime series and how good they were. So naturally I was curious as to what they were talking about and starting watching those series.

My first anime experiences were with yu-gi-oh, pokemon, and Digimon when I was little, but I didn't really know what anime was at that point, so I just thought, "these are cool shows!" I only REALLY got into anime (knowing what anime was at that point) a few years later when I came across Ergo Proxy as I was randomly surfing youtube, and ended up watching the whole thing in one sitting. After that I decided to watch some other anime shows to see if I could really get into it. I ended up watching Darker Than Black, and Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, and I was completely hooked.

Spirited Away.

The best anime anyone could watch as a first anime.

Full metal alchemist for me.

I had watched pokemon and a little bit of naruto so i was kinda used to the art style and it didn't bother me. I found these disks that my brother and sister had burned episodes of full metal alchemist on and i was immediately hooked. I had never seen anything so dark and light-hearted at the same time and it fascinated me. When i finished i sought out more things like it.
