I am good with emotional intelligence when it comes to other people, but not when it involves myself.

Sure, emotional intelligence is a thing, but like intelligence, it's far more varied than people tend to give it credit for. Empathizing with people, knowing how to interact with them, understanding your own psyche, detecting insincere behaviour, mediating disagreements, and convincing people to agree with you are all different skills that could feasibly fall under the domain of the nebulous term "emotional intelligence", probably along with a handful of others I've not considered.

I don't really subscribe to the view that things like "brain power", "common sense", or "people skills" can be summed up so broadly. Most people will have a couple things they're good at, and a couple things they're not. I can tell when people are lying, and diffuse tense situations with little effort, but I'm terrible at getting my way or saying the right thing to cheer people up. Would I have a high emotional intelligence or a low one?

A term is only as good as its usefulness in conversation, so while I certainly believe that all these skills that make up what we call "emotional intelligence" are valuable, and that some people are better at them than others, I don't like the term itself, because its broadness creates the mistaken belief that someone who is good at one of them must necessarily be good at them all.

Emotional intelligence? I can't wrap my head around such a concept. Sure there's things like reading people, and empathy and whatnot. But is that emotional intelligence? This term confuses me and enrages me. I do not like it.

I have no emotional intelligence, I suppressed my emotions during a foster care stay when I was younger, and since then, every time I've shown emotion, it devolved into me acting out, and ultimately finding myself alone. It doesn't help that showing emotion to my father satisfies a need of his for psychological abuse of others.

"Emotional Intelligence
! Theories of emotional intelligence (EI) are based
on the observation that individual diff erences exist
in the extent to which individuals can reason about
and use emotions to enhance thought (Salovey
& Mayer, 1990). Since its inception, EI has been
employed to cover a variety of traits and concepts,
mixing personality traits with socioemotional
abilities (Bar-On, 1997; Goleman, 1998; Petrides
& Furnham, 2003), producing what Mayer et al.
(2000) refer to as “mixed models” of EI. ! is state
of aff airs has spurred various critiques of EI, arguing
that EI is too all encompassing to have scientifi c
utility (Eysenck, 2000; Locke, 2005).
Agreeing with these criticisms, Mayer, Salovey,
and Caruso (2008) argue for a four-branch model
of EI that off ers a more precise, ability-based formulation
of the construct. According to their model,
EI involves the ability to (ordered from lower level to higher level emotional abilities): “(a) perceive
emotions in oneself and others accurately, (b) use
emotions to facilitate thinking, (c) understand
emotions, emotional language, and the signals conveyed
by emotions, and (d) manage emotions so as
to attain specifi c goals (p. 506).” ..."

The last use of EI catches my attention the most in this excerpt.

A psychologist handed me a shtton of tests and my emotional intelligence test results weren't among those that caught his interests so I wouldn't be surprised if my emotional intelligence is fairly normal.
