Am i the only one that thinks that with all the giant mech animes on Cr that they need to start bringing in the series of animes that was the ones that exposed many to the concept of giant pilotable mechs...

Mobile suit Gundam (and any anime bearing the Gundam name)

Ok, this isn't really what the topic is about, but...

I have watched about 70 anime now but I've only seen a few mecha shows.

Neon Genesis Evangelion (HATED it, but not because of the mecha stuff, because of the awful characters and the nihilistic themes)
RaXephon (it was alright)
Gurren Lagann (my favorite anime, but not because of the mecha stuff, because of the characters and themes)
Code Geass (yeah, more of a political intrigue show with a side helping of mechas, but anyway, I've seen it)

I'm interested in seeing some of THE mecha shows, but am not sure where to start. Especially with things like Gundam. When a franchise spans decades do you go back and start with the original or is there a newer series that would make a good starting point?

Basically, looking for advice on how to dive into the mecha genre. What shows I should try and where I should start with some of those huge franchises.

I'd start with Full Metal Panic or Code Geass. I don't especially care for Mecha, but I liked both of those. Unfortunately, neither of those are here on CR. FMP is available on Funi/Hulu, not sure where CG is available. I thought I remember hearing that Funi licensed it, but it isn't up there yet...

CR had many of them. But, the studio pulled the licenses. I think it was in anticipation ofstarting their own streaming service (that never happened).

I do know that many Gundam series are available legally on YouTube.

As far as what to watch, the recommendations here are pretty good. I also recommend Patlabor (not sure where you can find this, I think the series is on Hulu but good luck finding the movies), Appleseed (on Amazon Instant Video), Eureka 7 (I know the sequel series is on Hulu), and Knights of Sidonia (on Netflix last I checked).

To get any of the Macross series you may have to go over to the darkside................. I think that the Macross Plus OVA's (four parts) are available via instant video, so there is that.
