How hard would it be for us to collectively create an anime?
Posted 1/2/15 , edited 1/2/15
You know what I think would work? A petition to create a Katawa Shoujo anime. Although, I believe in a couple of years we might be getting one.

Back on topic, I'm unsure about joining the group, as I have absolutely nothing to offer except criticism.

No, but seriously, we can probably handle a Katawa Shoujo OVA.

Is this to say you weren't serious about the erotic novel idea?

I am completely serious about the erotic novel thing. Basically, you have to

-Draw character sketches
-Create background scenes
-Draw erotic scenes
-Draw up a storyline where each girl has a traumatic past or problem she can't overcome without the protagonist's help, each self contained.

Wala, you just made a visual novel. It may seem generic, but a lot of visual novels take this form and have been greatly successful, from Fate/Stay Night to Ever17 to Clannad. One of the things I be careful of is drawing characters or scenes similar to already existing content.

I agree, this is a much easier route to take...

I think people are looking at this all wrong, if you want the community to make an anime than the community needs to decide. Why not open contests for each section we need? We can have a plot summary contest, followed by character design contests, etc. We could break it down as far as we need this way even starting by voting what genre.

It would take some time but it takes time to create any anime so I think that's something we should be prepared for.

Additionally I think it would build the crunchy roll community and raise a lot of attention were it to be completed which would only help further the community and anime world.

That's not a bad idea but I think if we are to use that method we should use it more as a audition process. Maybe for writing it would work exactly as you said, but imagine animation say 10 people put countless hours into a bit of animation they all did the same animation and only 1 of the 10 get to be used. That's wasting a lot of time if each of the 10 worked on a different section it could be finished a lot faster without throwing away perfectly good animation (That is assuming all 10 are competent animators) Witch is why I think we should find all the good ones and bring them on. Of course the community can still decide a lot of things. I just think its to time consuming to have a voting round for everything that goes on.

The issue with having 10 different animators handle it is that each of them are likely to use different software and different techniques and tricks to produce content efficiently. It is like programming in a way but unlike programming those various styles aren't hidden away in the code but instead very visible. It is hard to mimic the style of another artist perfectly and when there is motion involved it stands out even more.

It isn't impossible but it would be difficult to manage. I say the best route would be to make sure there is at least a standard development software, one that is effective yet cheap to aquire.

Yeah, I just used animators as a example I know that it would be nigh impossible to get 10 animators to work together through the internet.

It wouldn't happen since the first part of picking who does what and what the genre/plot will be won't get anywhere. You need a boss to tell you what the chain of command is and what the genre/plot is going to center on. There is no way people on Crunchyroll can agree on any of those.

That with a scene by scene modular design philosophy is actually similar to how The Elder Scrolls games are designed at a quest writing level. With a more narrow focus like would be found in an anime it could turn out great. To a certain extent I think Doctor Who is handled this way as well.

I think a rotation should work, 2-3 guys start with the drafting character build and we move on from there and just rotate the scenes every now and then.

Kinda like a serious anime in Magi: The Kingdom of Magic
with those funny side clips like where Aladdin does something funny..

I really like this idea, and think this is a brilliant idea. A community-generated anime... it's like a dream come true (or yet to come true, but hopefully will).

It will also give me something to work on during the time where I'm bored or have nothing to do. And as an artist, I have always wanted to collaborate with other artists/writers (though I never have the courage/guts to).

__________

I think the main challenge for this project is... "motivation". Will EVERYONE be motivated enough for a project of this scale? even if one person falters, I think it will set the project back a lot.

Other than that, I think it would be fine, we are mostly agreeable people, and if there's something we can't agree on, we can always make a poll, majority wins etc.

Honestly, I'm excited and motivated. Mainly because I want to be a part of something creative, and want to see what the end results will be like.

___________

(And since this isn't a money-driven project, we can go crazy with our ideas and don't have to worry whether it will be a hit or a flop... we can just have fun with it, you know?)
