Hello everyone :]

I'm looking for information in regards to travelling in Japan. I intend to take my mother to Japan in the next 2-3 years for her 65th birthday. Japan was the first country she travelled abroad to in her early 20s, and I know she's been dying to go back.

For the time being, I'm just looking for opinions and experiences in regards to travelling in Japan. We'd be travelling for 2-3 weeks, with two days of travelling at either end of the trip (we will be coming from Canada).

I'm also looking for good travel blogs, books and websites.

Furthermore, my family has been abroad a lot, and we like to explore as "travelers" as opposed to "tourists" - what I mean is, we tend to be interested in local foods and markets, would usually prefer to stay in inns rather than hotels, will probably want to buy traditional items as opposed to cliche souvenirs (ie. my mom has a kimono from her first trip - she wore it when she married my father years later).

My mom was born in Western Canada and has always loved mountains, but she has a bad knee, so (without saying Mt Fuji, cause that's a given), I'm also interested in information in regards to mountains and osens with good views and either light hiking (she can still handle a good 5-10km hike if not too steep) or gondola accessibility to mountain tops.

I'm doing plenty of research on my own end, but I have always found it more interesting to discuss travelling abroad with people who can give you genuine opinions ^.^

Thanks in advance!

I visited Japan with my family for about 10 days in October. We were part of a tour group for the first 5 days and then went on our own to explore Kyoto for 3 more days and Tokyo for 2 more days.

This website is a really comprehensive guide on Japan: www.japan-guide.com

Here's a useful site for looking up train/subway timetables and costs: www.hyperdia.com

If you're planning on going to Kyoto, I highly recommend the Backpacker's Ryokan Budget Inn (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g298564-d798533-Reviews-Backpacker_s_Ryokan_Budget_Inn-Kyoto_Kyoto_Prefecture_Kinki.html)
It's about a 3-5 minute walk from Kyoto station and is very comfortable and clean.

Feel free to ask anything. I'll try to help as best as I can. Also, just a tip, I think you'll get a lot of useful information from the forums on tripadvisor.
