Anime That All Aspiring Otaku Should Watch?
Posted 1/3/15 , edited 1/3/15
What are the anime that all otaku, and future otaku, should watch? These are the shows that give you a black mark on your credibility as an anime fan if you haven't seen them.

No one has to like these shows, but which are the ones that, regardless of taste, preference, or genre, all anime fans should watch at least once in their lives? The shows that define what anime is and show their viewers why anime is important, where it's come from, and where it's going.

My picks are Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Fullmetal Alchemist (both the original series and Brotherhood).

I'm excited to read your choices!

The **** is "otaku cred"? that is the most pseudo pretentious term since "Pseudo pretentious".

However, for the sake of answering the question, I would suggest, Black Lagoon, Jormungand, Ghost in the shell, Full metal panic and Mardock scramble.

I would say to try each anime genre:

Miyazaki movies

Hunter x Hunter - Shounen

Inuyasha or Runrouni Kenshin - Shounen

Neon Genesis Evangelion - mecha

Akira

To Love-Ru - Ecchi

Clannad or Anohana - Drama

Gintama - Comedy

Sailor Moon or Card Captor Sakura - Shoujo

Vampire Knight or Fruits Basket or Nana - Romance

None.

Ok, maybe a Miyazaki movie as the person above me posted. Like perhaps Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke

Other than that.... none.

EDIT - Crossed out Princess Mononoke. The fact that people don't get it is itself evidence for me that it's not something everyone should have to watch. Perhaps now you see why I started out with "none".

I'm just going to suggest rather normal/mainstream but good (IMO) ones.
Soul Eater
Steins;Gate
Fruits Basket
Any magical girl show, maybe Madoka Magica
Usagi Drop
Full Metal Alchemist (and Brotherhood)
Any ecchi and any reverse harem

I honestly haven't watched most of the typical "every anime fan must watch things" like Death Note and Code Geass. Too lazy. Also, I tried watching Akira, and couldn't think straight for a week.

Well Miyazaki's work are pretty much accepted by the mass so you dont have to be an otaku to watch it.

What an all aspiring otaku should do is watch current anime as they get released
