Don't call yourself an otaku. Thats like a rapist calling himself a rapist. Drop the self proclamation and just be you. lol
Just watch whatever tickles your pickle.

White Album 2 is the beginning and the end!!!

I thought casual audiences like mainstream stuff? I thought "otaku" liked hidden gems? Not to fan any flames, but I'd say 90% or so of things here are hyper mainstream stuff that the casual anime viewer would like. Not to say an "otaku" wouldn't. I just think I have a different impression of what the most hardcore audiences like.

Without naming titles, it is like a casual competitive game player would gravitate towards a MOBA and a hardcore competitive game player would go for a RTS. One clearly requires more speed (though we can easily have a debate on "team" vs "single player" -- one most not forget the most popular RTS has team events as singles).

Anyways, best of luck filling out things an Otaku must watch. If I angered anyone, please go easy on me.

Me either. It's too long and not as interesting as other Ghiblis to me. I like how crazy violent it is though.

As for the topic, I don't like the idea that you have to have watched a particular series in order to be a 'real fan' or whatever. Especially since the things that are normally touted as essential anime are ones that I don't care for. Akira, for instance. Eh.

It really depends on what your taste is individually since there are genres within anime. I could say Cowboy Bebop but if you don't like sci-fi then that's not much use to you either. Baccano, maybe? Evangelion? It's not really about the robots so it doesn't matter if you're not into mecha. I wasn't.

It's true that the term "otaku" comes with a negative stigma so you shouldn't aspire to be one but the thing is a lot of times people don't know that. For people who aren't familiar with the negativity that is attached to the term "otaku" it means anime fan to them... so I'm just assuming here that the OP means "otaku" as an anime fan and not the "otaku" stereotype.

Some people believe the term otaku is only negative to those who think dabbling in the lifestyle is bad for one's health or distasteful, such as conservatives. Some people believe being a gamer is bad and unhealthy, yet you see people today still refer to themselves as gamers, because fuck Jack Thompson. That being said, it appears that while I can't translate this, Wikipedia lists this article on a study as a source that many people now self identify as "otaku" and that it has less of a negative connotation today than it did in the 80s with the Otaku murderer. According to the study, 62% of teenagers now identify as Otaku, so it can be said the stigma is largely with the older generation.

Anime and Manga is quite similar to video games. There's objectionable content that is blame for society's ills, and a stigma to those who associate or dabble in those interests.

You just listed the most mainstream animes out there, but I'll give you credit that it's been quite some time since they aired, so they can be considered classics.

Im saying that I think there is no point to identifying with a title like otaku. People who do tend to do that lose any sort of uniqueness to themselves and also lose any unique perspective on anything. Life is a lot more interesting if you just be uniquely yourself and avoid following any trends. Be a trendsetter if anything! If you still don't understand, Ill use water as a metaphor. Don't flow with the ripples, be the drop.
