So I've been following the Oculus Rift VR headset development for a while now. For those who aren't familiar with the device, this is a virtual reality headset that does 6-axis head tracking and stereo/3d video at a (projected) price point that would make it accessible to the mass/consumer market. A Nerve Gear or Amusphere (SAO) it isn't, but definitely headed in that direction.

Obviously the primary intended use for this device is the first-person gaming market, but I'm posting this here because there's a demo included in the developer kit for the device that re-creates the bus-stop scene in the movie "My Neighbor Totoro", with the viewer/player taking the role of Satsuki Kusakabe and interacting with Totoro (and Catbus). The demo is a bit rough around the edges, but it is only a demo after all (for developers only at that) and was probably just designed to get the Idea out there.

A walkthrough of the demo is here (random selection from YouTube), just so you can see the device in action with someone "playing" the demo I'm talking about..

I'm interested in the reaction of people here to such a use for this device. Is there an interest in "playing" your favorite animes as a participant from a first-person perspective instead of a passive viewer? Which anime would you most like to play a role in?

Or would it be better to leave animes as something to be passively viewed and let games be the primary means for those that wish to be more participatory?

If there's a better place to post this please let me know.

It would be really fun to use this to reenact all kinds of anime battle scenes! The potential for the device's enhancement of the viewing experience can't be overestimated. It'll take anime from being a visual medium to being an interactive visual medium! Think of the potential for shounen action series, magical girl adventures, harem fantasies, horror stories! This platform is getting more and more exciting the more the borders of its uses vanish. I say full steam ahead on enhancing anime's ability to immerse the viewer.

Until we get Star Trek-style holodecks I ain't interested in so-called "VR" toys. I don't even like wearing headphones. Wearing a heavy screen-helmet-controller thinger? Screw that.

Except that sometimes I don't really want to be all that interactive. Don't get me wrong, I like games too. I'm even planning on building a new gaming system around the Oculus when it comes out, and I already have a list of games I want to try. (Though I'm probably going to skip the horror genre.. at least until I get a good seatbelt/restraint system installed. ) I could certainly get into some animes if they were interactive.

But I often like just sitting down and relaxing while watching my favorite anime too. I certainly wouldn't want animes in their current form to disappear entrely. I already tend to avoid watching animes like Karen Senki that look too CGI-ish, and I appreciate things like the awesome backgrounds in Hanasaku Iroha. I wouldn't want that sort of thing to get lost in a refocus towards interactivity and "playability".

I guess my personal ideal would be something like having animes be both playable and watchable. "Watchable" would be more like what we have now, where you just watch the actions of the characters without really participating. "Playable" would be maybe something like karaoke, where you pick one of the characters and actually play the part, as if acting in a play.

I hear what you're saying, but I think it'll be a while before we get there. Unfortunately.

I could certainly go for a bit of kit like an Amusphere too though. It doesn't have to be a full-up holodeck. As long as I don't notice it while using it I don't really care.

I don't believe Oculus Rift is yet an Invention of the Century yet, not unless it's being made by Professionals like Microsoft C.

There are so much flaws it's crazy, talk about being bad for the eyes, the light showing off on that thing isn't safe for using yet.
