That is an anime I regret watching. You have Elfen Lied, Higurashi, and School Days which are over the top gore where the violence becomes a spectacle. Then you have this... This doesn't have any over the top gore or anything super graphic but it is nonetheless difficult to stomach, 99% of the anime is rape, torture, and murder,

And this is basically an anime re-telling of the war in the Sudan. As such it is a great and powerful anime, not for entertainment, but to make people better understand.

As such it is a favorite anime of mine

Now I am intrigued, thanks for that brief description.

Corpse Party: Tortured Souls AKA we can't put the story properly into 4 episodes so we'll simply make it as bloody as we can.

Pokemon.
Ash loved pikachu and he forced it to fight on a daily basis.
In the game he did it for money.

Like I tend to say every time Corpse Party comes up, please, please play the games (via PSN if you have PSP and / or Vita) instead! They are fantastic. Brilliant use of voice acting and sound effects. The anime, by showing everything (and skimming through the story, as Xylrot notes) just ruins it.

Good to see, too, that I am not the only one who remembers Urotsukidoji. I debated whether or not to even bring that one up, since it is pretty much straddling the border between regular anime and out-and-out hentai. But, yeah (spoilered for nasty things):

Umineko (not the anime, the visual novel)
Higurashi (ditto)
Saya no Uta (not an anime, but its urobutcher for you)
Genocyber
Muvluv alternative (the visual novel, not the spin off. PTDS chomp scene anyone?)
Elfen Lied (the gore got a bit comical at some point).

You're welcome. Anime like this is important as it shows that anime can express more than ecchi and moe!
I have to believe the characters skin tone was chosen on purpose. I don't want to do any spoilers, but let's just say if an anime made you think about real world issues, this is assuredly at the top of the list!

I've watched a few.
Pupa was the most horrifying to me. Not sure if it was the cannibalism or the incest that really horrified me.
Mirai Nikki was mostly funny to me. I couldn't take it seriously, but it was pretty gruesome.
Also the Blood+ franchise.
Deadman Wonderland.
School Days.
Elfen Lied.
Highschool of the Dead.

Uhh I know there's more but those were the ones that stood out to me the most.

Rin, daughters of mnemosyne or however it's spelled. i haven't seen it for quite awhile though... only other one i've seen that comes close in recent memory would have to either be the higurashi series or berserk, could throw gantz in the mix too.

Woah, I forgot all about Rin and Gantz.
Maybe I was too traumatized by what I had seen to even want to remember it.

I originally thought gantz would of been the first anime mentioned, given all the gore in it and descriptive scenes through out the series.

Definitely School Days, I mean Akame Kill was bad, but just the way the series ended was brutal and uncalled for and just surprising.

At the end it made me feel just as awful as Akame did, if not (in my opinion) more

Hated the anime before that, and hated it after. Don't care about the other alt endings. this is brutal. Sexually and gory.

You know, you would think Gantz would be one of the most gruesome ones but I also noticed that it's not very popular? That could possibly be the reason it's not mentioned as much. I remember when I saw the first episode, I almost quit the series altogether xD It was worth watching it though. Made my life seem a lot like a cake walk.

Akame ga Kill was mostly ridiculous and it didn't seem that bad at all. It was more comical to me than anything.
Now for School Days, that was a WHOLE different story. I never imagined the build up as the series progressed to actually end in that horrific way it had. It was unexpected but expected all at the same time. People can only be pushed so far, you know? And that was a perfect example of psychological torture and pushing people to their limits until they just break.

Exactly, sure, Akame ga Kill was gory and bloody etc. But after "bro" died I didn't feel that much. I mean, it got to the point of unnessasary deaths. School Days>Akame just because of the way School Days NAILED you off guard with a disturbing scene that actually made you feel crappy. I mean, both of these anime were awful IMO (School Days looked good in the first 2 episodes to be a good love anime, but than turned into a boy in puberty going after girl after girl until one snaps and starts murdering... Akame ga Kill IMO had potential to be a Gintama/Naruto/ Pokemon(ON A LIMB) show where it continues longer. I would've watched it for sure! Good characters for as long as they lasted

Oh well
Both were terrible in my opinion anyway. :P

Just Akame<School Days because of the way School Days way of doing it.
