CR: PLEASE UPGRADE YOUR STREAMING SERVERS!!!!!

I never had issues before, but lately it is getting worse and worse during peak times. My stream right now was buffering every 15 seconds on the Wii U. I just switched over to the Roku 3, and streaming Funimation in HD without a single hiccup.

Not my connection at all.

They've been having issues especially during the holidays since that DDoS attack happened. They've been getting things back to normal during this time so hopefully it will be back to 100% soon.

It is pretty lame that I can watch 1080p videos on Funimation as a free user and on Crunchyroll they can't even serve a premium member 720p video without freezing every few seconds and continues to blame my computer/ISP. NO IT'S YOU!

Other things I noticed on the Wii U, the streams abruptly end at some random point in the middle random episodes.

I started noticing lots of buffering on the iPhone app, but Im not complaining, since they had a DDOS attack like about a week ago..

I wonder if it's possible to have a back-up server in case the first one goes down.

CR has multiple servers they manage, in addition to two separate content delivery networks.

Source: I once interviewed for a position with CR, and their current listing for a Senior DevOps Engineer heavily emphasizes experience with Puppet, which allows for managing a very large number of Linux servers. So I think the "back-up server" is covered.

Unless you are in Canada, free users normally get their stream from Hulu (even if watching at Funimation's site).

By any chance are you a Hulu Plus subscriber? If so, you aren't getting those HD streams free, you're paying Hulu for them.

Funimation's own viewer isn't supposed to provide HD streams to non-subscribers, as that is touted as a subscriber-only benefit (just as with CR).

Actually, they have pretty much stated (several times) that the problem is their end. They've been getting DDoSed recently. And are working to mitigate and solve the problem. And although they haven't openly stated it, I suspect that the underlying issue currently isn't totally fixed but they are working hard on restoring service.

If they have been telling you to change DNS settings, this is not implying that the fault is your end. DNS issues can take time to propagate across the internet. And by changing from your ISP's DNS to an open one (or vice versa) you have a good chance of switching to one that has the updated information.

At the moment, especially their device servers are still having issues for some but not all people. And, from what I can tell, it is down to whether the DNS they (or their ISP) are using has processed the changes yet.
It really can make the difference between "can watch perfectly fine" and "nothing will play at all". For the same episodes of the same shows.
