depends on the format. If done with rules, regulation, points, and is only about regulated matches as the main focus, then yes. If hunter x hunter, then no.

Dragonball, not Dragonball Z. For the most part it was pretty seriously Martial Arts focused with the climax of the arcs being the tournaments. And everyone knows flying is a martial art.

Yowapeda takes it for me. But I loved Kuroko, Haikyu, and Ace of the Diamond.

I watched Dragonball for the last 20 years and although it has sports elements(martial arts tournament),it is too entrenched in fantasy anime category to ever be considered a sports anime. Thats just my opinion and your free to have yours.

Ping Pong the Animation. I wasn't a huge fan of sports anime because they were all the same. The art can throw many people off, but set it off aside and just take a look at the characters.

I have to say that I really am enjoying Yowamushi pedal, and wish they would continue the anime for Hajime no Ippo. But I also find it interesting that no one is mentioning Prince of tennis and Eyeshield 21. Though baby steps was much better at introducing tennis to people.

The only one I've yet to see thus far is Ace of the Diamond, and I liked it ok.
