They better get more stuff.

If I had to choose between which HS subs I'd prefer, I'd definitely pick the lesser of two evils over FUNimation's "Just like a plan" nonsense.

Personally, I'm willing to wait to see what titles they finally announce. It seems like this happens every release season - lots of threads wondering when CR will announce the titles for the season, then lots pointing out how few ? boxes they have in the lineup, then lots of titles finally announced, far more than others get for the most part.

Funimation does seem to be making more of a push lately, but a lot of their big licenses are shared (like AoT was) with CR as well.

I assume you mean "more new simulcasts", since CR already had more total simulcasts for the season than Funimation will, even before CR announced its first new one. Unless they add more boxes, Funimation will have 16 simulcasts total (including 4 continuing), while CR already had 25 continuing from the previous season.

If you do mean new simulcasts, then no, this isn't the first time. In Summer 2010 CR had 5 new simulcasts (one being a short form anime), while Funimation had 7.

This season was lean to start with. Including specials and a number of short form anime, it has 38 titles vs. 51 for last winter.

Yeah, Funimation got quite a few good ones this season. Crunchyroll are usually quite slow with announcing their titles so give it time. But I bet Cruchyroll with have a few more titles that Funimation have (hopefully).

Yeah, I do mean new.

I know we have quite a bit of Fall leftovers so it's not a big deal but I was just curious on why Funi is pumping out all the new simulcasts this season compared to why don't they do it every season.

You make it sound as if it was a sudden increase. In fact, it has been a steady progression since last spring:

Fall 2013: 8 new simulcasts
Winter 2014: 8 new simulcasts
Spring 2014: 9 new simulcasts
Summer 2014: 10 new simulcasts
Fall 2014: 11 new simulcasts (including the 2 episode Buddy Complex special)
Winter 2015: 12 new simulcasts

Anime industry can`t be farmed that hard all the seasons .In the Last season, Funimation simulcast was around 5 (Exclusives) shows?
In my opinion this stuff is normal to happen, yet announcement aren't over yet. Believe in the chart boxes!

Oh wow, now that I see it like that maybe it's just the amount of simulcasts that CR gets that makes it seem that Funimation doesn't get very many.

Thanks for this!

Frankly, I was a bit surprised myself. I thought this season was a noticeable jump from last season, but the numbers don't lie.

At some point, Funimation's advance has to grind to a halt, but I wonder how long that number will continue to climb before that point is reached.

Another thing you have to keep in mind, CR usually has a lot more because of the 8-12 Sentai additions.

In fact, if it wasn't for Sentai, AoA, NISA and most of the other R1 companies, CR probably wouldn't have nearly as many simulcasts each season.

The problem for licensors is that the Japanese Anime industry views physical media like Blu-Ray and DVD as king. So when they look at Funi and Crunchy and see one that offers a strong streaming product and another that offers a not so great streaming product but has the capability to not only distribute the anime in physical form but do their own dubbing as well, they will prefer them over the company with the very good streaming. So I understand why Funimation is getting all these new shows but I hate it at the same time. Streaming on their website is getting better, for TV it's ok, but it's still terrible on mobile, which is where I do most of my anime watching. Also, Funimation still doesn't sync your place across all those platforms like Crunchyroll does so I can't watch an anime on my laptop and pick up where I left off on my TV for example. All in all, these announcements just make me sad. Also, having to pay for premium membership for both os these sites hurts my pocket.

It does feel like that had less early announcements than previous seasons but a lot of shows they announce the day before or day of.

I really hope CR gets Assassination Classroom as well so I don't have to wait for Funi's weird Hulu schedule. Some of their shows air the day of, some a week later, some HD some not. Barakamon took weeks before it became available.
