1. My best friends are all into it too, so they know that I like it.

2. Pfff, no. That would be one damn awkward conversation. I mean, if someone asked, I would probably tell them if I wanted to. But otherwise, no. I don't go around asking people about what kind of porn they're into.

3. Either something fluffy or something really melancholy with a good story and good art, with minimal sex.

4. Hm, that's a good question. I think it has less to do with the stigma against homosexuality and more to do with misconceptions (well, mostly) about the fandom and the genre(?) itself. I think a lot of people probably consider all fans of yaoi to be the stereotypical fujoshi. You know, gross, probably overweight, antisocial, only interested in fiction characters, etc. I'm certain there are people out there who fit that description perfectly (actually, I know a few...), but it's just another stereotype. And then there's also the fact that people who've never read it think that all yaoi is Junjo Romantica. Tons of rape, bad art, stupid story, things like that. Nevermind that the best romance stories you'll find in manga are BL or yaoi. If you've never bothered to look further than the mainstream, your impression of the genre will probably be very bad. I used to think that BL and yaoi were all creepy rape fantasies made for antisocial women, but that's before I actually bothered to read some of the lesser-known titles.

1- I don't need to tell my friends i'm into BL manga and YAOI animes, they know.
i just don't care if they are there or not, i watch or read my things when I want and they know it. (my best friend even started to watch YAOI with me... he's black and awesome and not gay. lol)

2-beside my "friends", and i don't consider that i have that much, i really don't want people to know that about me. I don't have a particular motive for that, but it's like a fetish I think. I'm not ashamed of it but i won't write it on my face either.

3- because that where all the good jokes are hiding of coure. I'm talking about "Gakuen heaven" here. freaking funny, if you don't konw it go watch it now.

favorites BL manga- Yume musubi, koi musubi - Himegoto asobi - Junketsu drop
favorite YAOI anime- Ai no kusabi - Uragiri wa boku no namae o shitteiru - Gakuen heaven - Junjou romantica - Sekaiichi hatsukoi - Koisuru boukun... there's so many

well I'll start this off by saying I'm a straight male just to put my reason for responding in perspective

1. To say I'm an avid fan of BL is a severe overstatement, since the only BL anime I've actually watched is Junjou Romantica (mainstream af I know) but I really enjoyed it and I don't see why I should hide that from my friends if they asked (I wouldn't actively bring it up though because all of my friends bully me about watching anime altogether). I don't actively search out BL even after having watched JR but if I hear a series is good and discover it is BL, that certainly won't deter me from watching. I don't really see how it's any different to standard romance anime.

2. I don't really see how this is different from question 1. but I would certainly recommend series if I thought they were good (i.e. JR), personally I will watch any genre at all of anime, I don't think turning your nose up at an anime because it is a certain genre is a good way to go about it, as you could be missing what could become one of your all time favourite series, even if you aren't a big fan of the genre in general. For example, I'm not the biggest fan of Magical Girl anime but I still watch them when they're on because they can sometimes surprise me with the story depth or plottwists etc.

If someone happened to ask me if I knew of good BL anime then as I've already said I would only be able to recommend Junjou Romantica, but I know both Love Stage and Sekaiichi Hatsukoi are supposed to be very good and I plan on watching them both at some point or another.

3. For several reasons, one being that in general society people still have this bigoted perception of homosexuality because it is supposedly 'abnormal' or 'wrong.' Another is the perception that BL (or yaoi I don't really know if BL is referring to yaoi in general or more specifically shounen-ai) is just gay porn. I really don't get this accusation because if the kind of things that happen in BL were to happen in heterosexual-romance anime people might raise an eyebrow but that's about as far as the controversy would go. Thirdly is the natural consequence of the second; the perception that BL is essentially equivalent to gay porn leads to fans of BL being looked down on for celebrating and openly discussing what is seen as pornography, which would happen even with heterosexual romance anime if it had the same reputation.

In general the main reason is simply because of ignorance and hearsay.
