I hate getting really invested in an anime that starts off amazing and slowly degenerates into a train-wreck. Sword Art Online felt that way, for me. Although the worse of a train-wreck that became, the more hilarious is became, as well.

It's far, far worse when a show overstays its welcome, though. Shows that could have been 50 - maybe 75 episodes turn into hundreds of episodes of stagnation that have virtually no plot whatsoever. That is horrendous. That is why I now despise Naruto, actually.

Getting invested in characters can certainly leave you feeling down when a series comes to an end, but it can and will be so, so much worse, otherwise.

Quoted for truth.

I like my shows, but I never feel saddened or painful about a title unless that's the feeling it was going for. And that... It's cathartic.

Assuming they story and characterization is decent I tend to get attached to characters in any long form media, by that I mean something you spend a good amount of time with like a book or 12+ anime episodes not short like a movie.

When I'm done with it I feel sad like I'm saying goodbye to close friends.

It's worse if the ending is "bad". For example, I finished the Fate route of the FSN VN the other day and was depressed for days over saber. It wasn't even my first time through, I just wanted to unlock UBW to play along with the new series.

Yeah you're right on the money there. Long episodes/games is like embarking on a journey with the characters and like you said, they're like good friends at one point. Though RPG games kill me because it's like I actually participated in all the events... *cough* Kingdom Hearts series *cough*

It's painful when an anime ends, it's always, "I want more, give me more! Second Season NOW or RIOT!!"

Or when your favorite character dies.

Or that passion for anime that burns so bright that it hurts

And that pain in your pocket/wallet

I love anime but I don't usually get that emotionally invested, except for aldoah zero, that ending just pissed me off, I hated it with a passion and thought it would be insulting to expect us to watch the second season if the main character was going to be Slaine, it's looking like that won't be the case though so that's a relief.

Yes i get emotionally invested in anime due to the characters mostly. Painfull to see something tragic happen to them (like guilty crown or gurren laggan with kamina and mia) also certain anime i fell in love with i wish kept going (like kaze no stigma as a prime example) keep hoping for a season 2 never going to happen XD. That depressing feeling shows how awesome anime is to me but it doesn't give me a lack of sleep i have self control (least now i do XD)

Painful for my wallet.
Painful when I find out there is no season 2.
Pain of seeing the best characters die.
Pain of realizing that even if you were in the anime world, you're unimportant side character.

It's sad/funny how almost all original American cartoons/ whatever you call anime made in America are far far inferior to some of the great classics of anime it feels. It's such a cool feeling to talk to people on forums like this about it and go YEAh, I went there too :p.

PS For all you FMA fans out there

Painful for me because I wish I lived in that world and had the experiences the main character has instead of my own dull world full of repetition and non-anime girls.
