If the story is good and falls under the kinda stuff I like to watch, I'll watch it, regardless of how old it may be. I finished Maison Ikkoku last summer and I still rank it as the best romance anime that I've ever seen and that came out back in the 80's. I loved the original Gundam series and I have seen a few other cel based series like Rurouni Kenshin, Captain Harlock, DBZ or Yu Yu Hakusho but I definitely need to hunt some more down that fit what I like to watch. I've got Area 88 on my to watch list but I can never seem to get into the mood to watch it.

As others have said, as long as the story is good the animation doesn't matter. A lot of people still watch Voltron(Go Lion), Macross, Astro Boy, the original Gatchaman, and the original Space Battleship Yamato series. That's because the stories are timeless.

However, I will admit to trying to go back and watch some anime from my youth and being appalled at my taste when I was younger.

Look at my avatar. The '70s and '80s burn in my very soul! And there are often times when I prefer the character design from that time period.

I have learned that it is often best to leave the rose-coloured glasses on and bathe in nostalgia than risk realizing the bitter truth.

Oldest show I've ever watched is Revolutionary Girl Utena, and it's one of my favorites. If those graphic are considered "outdated," though...pfffftt

Outdated graphics? What are they, video games? Most of the "really old" anime were hand-drawn.

I prefer the styles from the 70's-80's.

Visuals is the biggest thing I go for really when it comes to watching anime and I just personally can't get into the visuals of older shows so no I do not watch them.

We really need to find you something older than 1997.

Watch Lupin the third Green vs Red. It will show you the evolution of graphics of 1 character.

The styles in older anime can look so nice. I loved the art in Key the Metal Idol, Gunbuster, and Slayers.

It all depends on preference, but if dated visuals keep you from enjoying something amazing, it's your loss.

This one character being Lupin, I'm assuming? I haven't seen much of anything related to Lupin, but I'll give it a shot.

You really should. I liked Area88 a LOT!

Nice story to it, plus the aerial combat is cool!

Nobody's girl and aim for ace are some good old anime. I never thought to watch old anime, but it was surprisingly good and the animation wasn't to bad.
