99.9% isn't good enough. I want 100%.

If that were the case, there would be no life on Earth.

Well I was talking about bacteria, but what you said makes sense.....super-bugs and other crazy sh!t.

There's also good bacteria.

Like others have said, there are often strains of bacteria that will be strong enough to survive the chemicals. Normally the strong ones don't flourish because there's competition from other bacteria - but if you kill off the competition, they can multiply unchecked and cause real trouble for humans.

I know some people who've gone to the hospital for surgery, gotten a MRSA infection from there, and had to go on extreme antibacterial courses for months, and bathe in antibacterial fluid three times a day, and weren't allowed to shave. Basically, because they do so much antibacterial cleansing at hospital, they've become breeding grounds for super-harmful bacteria.

In less than 5 seconds after you have done your anti-bacterial spray...more bacteria is on you.

Over all I was thinking if it did kill 100% the area that it was killed it would not be able to support life.

There is bacteria living inside our bodies. What will you do about those?

This was actually on an episode of QI (Brits will know)

The majority of them DO actually kill 100% of bacteria but because it's very difficult to prove, they just say 99.9% for legal reasons, simple as that.

Don't worry, if there's one thing humans are good at, it's discovering new ways to kill things:

The human body contains like 100 trillion bacteria... So I wouldn't get too fixated on the whole anti-bac fad, you're all potentially doing yourself and future generations a disservice.

Live and let live! Or in this case... Let live, and they'll enable you to do the same. :D

I don't think detergent can kill fungi spores. it was a microbiology lectures from like years ago, but sometimes not even boiling water temperature can kill microbes... you need like... to autoclave those tough microbes.

In retrospect, it probably doesn't even kill 99.9%. They're just trying to make the moneys.

I dunno, maybe 100% makes it seem less official and more exaggerated.
