I honestly think this is dumb. I actually got 2 years of free community college exactly like this, but through this A+ program where anyone could apply that was in high school. All you had to do was tutor for 40 hours in local middle or high schools, and sign up for the program anytime during high school. Some people are just lazy or sign up the last minute.

Granted, this offer doesn't exist everywhere but the real change should be for higher colleges and universities. Like tuition not costing as much as a decent car (and sometimes a house) every year. Plus usually paying for books... at least free books would be nice. Compared to other countries, this is a ridiculous amount of money. Yeah there are scholarships, but it's a competition to get really good ones.

I don't trust the notion. If it passes, I'd keep an eye out for unpleasant side-effects during the next few years or so.

Yeah..... we're still trying to find those weapons of mass destruction, so of course we can't stop dumping away most of our budget into our military.

Are there anything such as facts anymore?

The entire world may just be a lie.

I think this is great. Honestly, the United States has fallen so far behind in education we may as well just pack it up and call it a day. We've failed, a lot.

People need incentive to get an education. I really think Obama has made a humongous step forward by proposing this, because as it is university and colleges are expensive, which is why people choose to go to community college. If they can do for 2/3 free, the rates of people who go will definitely rise.

We need more education in this wasteland

Just another one of Obama's plans for ruining the economy and downgrading this nation's education system.

Unless you're living under a rock, you would know that the U.S. has absolutely no money to fund free colleges. We're $18 trillion in debt and it only keeps rising. Even if you cut military spending (which this country would never do) it still wouldn't be enough to maintain the facilities in a college and hire professors. We'd have to cut spending on healthcare (which isn't even "free" like Obama's trying to convince people) and/or cut jobs. Alternatively, we could simply just double or even triple our taxes, leaving most people with less than 20% of their salary.

This is the same problem with raising the minimum wage too much. The money doesn't just magically appear out of thin air. Unless the rich start giving up their money like normal people, we'd have to continue to make the middle class poor and the lower class even poorer.

The quality of these colleges would also get worse. This means less professors, less work, less learning, etc. It's impossible to bring down the cost of tuition so drastically without taking something away from the college's.

Now, let's ignore our failing economy for a second. If community colleges do somehow become free, what would happen to our already bad education system? It would get worse. More people would be encouraged to go to these community colleges and stop there instead of seeking more education. The only people who would bother going to 4 year colleges would be people hoping to get into medical or law school.

As I mentioned earlier, the quality of these community colleges would go down. More people would be encouraged to attend a school that doesn't even teach them much just because it's free. With an education system that's really embarrassing for an industrialized nation, this would be a step backwards.

At the rate this nation is heading, I wouldn't blame people for thinking that we're a third world country. Our jobs, education, and debt could fool anyone.
