Why do anime main character have to die just like

Because drama?

Edit: I wouldn't count that as a spoiler seeing how it's so damn obvious looking at the show thus far Still, if you're watching "Your Lie in April", you probably don't want to click that spoiler button. Also, note to the OP, you may want to say what a spoiler is about (what show it is from) before posting it, especially when it is central to the thread and your post might not make any sense without it.

Is that a manga spoiler for Your Lie in April? Because if it is, I don't like you very much right now.

There is a thread for KimiUso in the manga forum: /forumtopic-867735/shigatsu-wa-kimi-no-uso

But if it's just speculation, then nevermind.

They don't have to.

ALL HAIL THE MACHINE GOD!

He who saves lives by ruining narratives. He who severs the restraints of logic. He who desecrates the notion of tragedy.

Our almighty ravager of poetry. Benevolent destroyer of all suspensions of disbelief. There are those who would curse his name and

sentence the innocent to eternal suffering. It is only through acceptance of his grace that eternal happiness can be achieved.

Witness for yourselves the happiness of those who have received his blessing.

People die in rl. If properly done a character death can be as wrenching as a real death. But it is very, very rarely done. Clannad After Story is one such example of well done.

You have a relationship, of a sort, with anime characters that you don't with real life deaths. I have had enough RL deaths of people close to me so that anime deaths if well done reopens the wounds and tear ducts.

If you want to avoid main character death stick to harems / romcoms / sports animes. Your Lie in April counts as drama.

Anyway harems / romcoms / sports animes will almost definitely not have any important characters dying.

Emotional impact! Drama! Because some writers are sadistic!

Killing off a main character, if done correctly, can make a story better. If there is no fear that characters will actually die a story lacks tension, especially if it revolves around fighting and battles. For me a story where everyone survives ends up feeling somehow cheapened, because that's usually not how things turn out. It's the endings where important characters are lost that really stick with you and make you feel like something actually happened - whether it was good or bad.

So I would say that main characters have to die in order for some types of stories to be good - but not all. I tend to loose interest in long running 'battle' shows where no one ever dies, kill some characters off and all of a sudden it's more interesting - because that way the end of every fight isn't pre-determined.

Lastly, I have to say that xxJing's soliloquy about Deux ex Machina was totally awesome. Loved it.

I think every anime should have a Game of Thrones style episode where half of the cast get wiped out. Especially the harems.
