I recommend Fate/Zero. It taps into mature ideologies and moralities, and is extremely dark & depressing.

Fate/Zero details the events of the 4th Holy Grail War in Fuyuki City, where seven masters summon servants to duke it out in order to obtain the Holy Grail.

Shin Sekai Yori (From the New World)

I highly recommend this to you. At least give the first episode a try and you'll understand.

I have a feeling older people won't like Code Geass.

Sword Art Online is terrific, I highly recommend it, albeit not really horror themed. Other good choices include Parasyte (as mentioned above), Akame Ga Kill, Attack on Titan (those last two are very dark). Valvrave the Liberator has pretty mature themes in it, and Aldnoah Zero is good too (both of which are mecha-based anime's).

Akame Ga Kill I feel was a cheap shonen thrill fest with seinen elements. If that passes as "mature", I don't even...
Sword Art Online is aimed at teenagers and 20 year olds, and sadly you can actually feel the targeted demographic in my opinion.

We got Another. It wasn't good in my opinion, but many others enjoyed it.

The parameters the OP put forth are a bit loose. Are we assuming the anime is aimed at a mature audience or can be enjoyed by one?

Another mature anime that gets much praise is Hellsing Ultimate, which I gave a respectable 7/10.

Hi, I started with one of the recommendations, Attack on Titan, and just finished watching all the episodes, I loved it!

What would you recommend next?

Try Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. It's long, but well worth it.
