If you're making a ecchi show the nipple and have the censored version on channels and the like and the dvd/br have exposure either that or why bother getting the uncensored if its not gonna show anything. Why censor in the first place then?

Honestly. I prefer the 'cleverly hiding the naughty bits' paradigm to the 'here have full frontal nudity' paradigm. If I want porn, I'll watch porn.

This should be a FAQ... CR doesn't censor anything themselves. They acquire the shows, the way they air on Japanese TV. They very seldom get catalog rights to air what appears on a DVD/Blu-Ray. If you wish to complain about censorship, this isn't the right place. Please direct your dissatisfaction directly to the companies who produce the anime.

i don't think you understand what im saying im saying an ecchi serious should show nipples or what not if they cover it with steam and such if it's censored fine cover it but don't block it in the "uncensored version"

The OP seems to be asking why some shows censor things for broadcast that don't really need censoring in the first place. This is because on the home video release there are no "naughty bits" when they are uncensored.

The simple answer is to sell Blu-rays, since the buyer does not know what's under the censorship until they buy them I suppose.

If you're talking about BD/DVD versions that don't show nipples (not due to censoring, but because they weren't part of the animation in the first place), keep in mind that just as their is soft core and hard core porn, there are varying degrees of ecchi.

As for why they would censor "light ecchi", as sonic720 said, it is primarily to help sell the Blu-rays and DVDs.

should we make a sub genre to ecchi one where nipple is exposed if uncensored? it would make it a hell of alot more sense that way

I think you are simplifying ecchi down to just tits, when ecchi really encompasses a wider range of material, including various levels of nudity or exposure of body parts of both men and women, suggestive images without nudity, sexually suggestive situations (sometimes simply based on comic misunderstandings, other times actual), etc,

I have no idea why you think a sub genre based on nipple exposure would make sense. For what purpose would it make sense to have some separate category? How would you envision that kind of categorizing to be used?

I feel like you're missing a more important question....

Do man nipples count?

When something becomes "ecchi" isn't really a hard and fast rule anyway. There is a spectrum of titillating content and fan service, that ranges from mildly naughty camera angles to out-right sex (which is sometimes depicted even in non-h content.

At the end of the day, Yosouga no Sora has more sexual content than Bakemonogatari, which has more sexual content than A Certain Magical Index, which has more sexual content than Toradora, which has more sexual content (thank God) than Bunny Drop. Where someone draws the line and says "this show is ecchi--that show isn't" is pretty arbitrary anyway. So I'm not sure what the point is in flagging shows that have nudity but only show barbie-doll anatomy (that is, everything is smooth, hairless, and rounded).

As to why shows do the barbie-doll anatomy in the first place: I'd guess it's a combination of stylistic choices, Japanese censorship and ratings laws (uncensored versions are still rated in Japan, at least if they are on Blue-Ray/DVD, and an R-18 rating can hurt sales), and marketing/publicity.
