Here’s a pretty straightforward question for those of who you post reviews here on CR.

What determines how many stars you’ll rate a show? What factors go into that thought process? What’s the difference between a 5 star rating and a 4 star rating to you?

For me, if I enjoyed a show and I recommend it, I’ll give it 5 stars, even if it isn’t, say, an artistic masterpiece. I believe there are different ways to enjoy something.

If I was able to finish the show, was at least entertained, but had a few reservations, I would give that a 3 or 4 star rating. Usually a 4 star rating.

If I didn’t like the show at all or if I wasn’t even able to finish the show, I wouldn’t even bother reviewing it. I’m also reluctant to post a review if I don’t feel like it would be of any value. For example, if the show had already been finished for some time or if there are already a thousand reviews.

How about you guys?

5 stars: I love it and will spend real money on BDs or DVDs.
4 stars: I liked it.
3 stars: Okay; good way to kill some time.
2 stars: Well, it didn't kill me, but I won't get that 30 minutes (hour, etc.) back again.
1 star: Disliked it; probably because it did something to one of my buttons and not in a good way.
0 stars: Hated it and want to track down the director make that person eat live electrical eels or at least make him look like . .

i haven't done a review nor rated the series here in CR, but if i did, it would be something like this..

☆☆☆☆☆
the characters are likeable, the pacing is just right, the story has a distinct flavor to it and is interesting in its own way
the dialogues are well-thought out. the animation and soundtrack is simply beautiful. there may be minor flaws here and there, but they don't detract to the overall enjoyability of the show

☆☆☆☆
the characters are likeable, the pacing is about right but may feel a bit rushed in some parts
the story/plot is interesting in its own way. the dialogues are well done for the most part
the animation and soundtrack is beautiful

☆☆☆
the characters are what you'd expect from an average show. the pacing is a bit rushed in some parts, and may omit some interesting parts from the original source material. the story/plot is nothing new, and there's no particular feature that makes the series stand out, though its not particularly bad, either. the dialogues are ok, but may have some cringe-worthy lines in some scenes.
the animation and soundtrack is average.

☆☆
the characters are not likeable. the pacing is rushed, and the series omit important scenes from the original source material
by adding more unnecessary fan-service/fan pandering. the story/plot itself is laughable. the dialogues are ok but contains some cringe-worthy lines. the animation/soundtrack is subpar.

so bad, not even worth the trouble of reviewing.

I give how many stars depending on whether or not I believe it earned those stars.

In other words, screw a system. I'll give it how many stars I want to give it to.

That being said, 1 star is either incoherent or uses too many tropes I don't like.

NGNL and Magical Warfare fall under this.

2 stars is more or less the same. The story itself wasn't good, but it was at least coherent.

Akame Ga Kill falls under this.

3 stars is above average, but still relatively average. I give Seitokai No Ichizon 3 stars

4 and 5 stars are well done.

5 stars is when I really enjoy it. I'm not a nitpicker, so I don't look for flaws at all. If I enjoyed it a lot, 5.
4 stars is when I really enjoy it, but there's some things that I dislike about it that change the whole way I feel about it.
3 stars when it's enjoyable, but hard for me to still find the motivation to watch.
2 stars when it takes a while for the hook, but still doesn't interest me too much.
1 star when it's bad lol

It has to make me want to re-watch the minute I finish the series. Story and characters needs to be well-paced, in depth and engaging throughout the series. Art, animation and music needs to all at least be solid. Worth spending money on.

☆☆☆☆
Worth giving a watch even if you're not a huge fan of the genre. Story must be well paced while characters need to be engaging and decently developed. Art, animation and music must be at least above average and must not be noticeably weak in any area,.

☆☆☆
Decent story and enjoyable characters. Pacing and development are at least satisfying. Art, animation and sound are relatively good though likely to be lacking in at least one major area.

☆☆
Completely meh overall. Story will be poorly paced and characters will be only moderately developed. Art, animation and sound will be below average in at least one major area.

Glasslip/mahou sensou level bad. Likely to be at least as annoying as Kyle's mom.

I once read Roget Ebert explain his rating system, and I really liked it; in general, that's what I try to use (his was a 0-4 system, but it can be adapted 1-5 easily enough):

0 Star: Nothing redeemable.
1 Star: Bad example of its genre(s). Stay away unless you love the genre, but even then be warned.
2 Star: Average for its genre(s). Watch it if you like the genre; otherwise you probably won't like it.
3 Star: Excellent for its genre(s). Everyone who loves the genre should love this; some who don't love the genre will also like it.
4 Star: Excellence that overcomes its genre: Everyone who doesn't absolutely hate the genre should watch this (and maybe some of them too).

I either like it (5 Stars) or I don't (1 Star). There's really no in-between for me. Keeps it simple.

I don't do reviews (at least not yet), but I do keep a personal ratings list of all the animes I've watched. I find 0-5 to be too limiting, so I go with 0-10. Also ultimately it comes down to just my enjoyment of the show and it's overall plot, I'm not crazy picky about the animation not being as good one episode, or the music not being as memorable or anything like that.

0-The show is either complete trash or something went wrong and made it so. I've only dished this out twice. First was to the second season of Oreimo. (The first season following the good ending that doesn't go into the second season is fine) And second was Pupa.

1/2- I've never actually used lol.

3/4-This is the bottom of the barrel for me. Pretty much these are not worth the time to watch, but some people might enjoy these as niche things. Usually a lot of harems/ecchis that I've seen end up here because they refuse to follow what a lot of the time would be an interesting plot in favor of fanservice. Otherwise the animes here just fail extremely hard in almost every respect or the entire premise really turned me off. Ex: Heaven's Lost Property, Magical Warfare

5-Just an average anime. Nothing great, but nothing that glaringly bad. At least in my ratings these tend to be the crazy popular animes. Ex: SAO, Attack on Titan

6/7-These are a step above average. These will usually have that something that makes it more enjoyable than an average anime, but will usually vary on preferences. These could be interchanged with the fives if you were a different person. Ex: Witch Craft Works, Nisekoi

8-Here these animes are fantastic and at least worth a watch, although there is still a bit of my personal preferences seeping in at this point and could thusly be moved around between here and a 5 still. Ex: Kinmoza!, Steins;Gate

9-These animes are what I consider the best. Great characters, great plots, great lessons/personal connectivity. These animes have what it takes to be watched repeatedly and be enjoyed each and every time. Ex: FMA: Brotherhood, Pet Girl of Sakurasou, Code Geass, Golden Time

10-Perfection in everything. I don't think any anime is actually able to achieve this, however I gave Fate/Zero a 10 because it was at least a 9 and I wanted to give something a 10 lol.

Everyone has differing views on different animes, but for me at least I generally believe what I give 7-10 are the better of the animes that most people would enjoy. As a sidenote I also take off a point if its a romance anime where the main characters don't kiss because that really grinds my gears.

pretty accurate for me as well.

5 stars would mean flawless, masterpiece

4 stars means I enjoyed it, but there are tiny flaws like predictable characters/dialogues

3 stars... average, needs a lot of improvement.

2 stars... bad, but has little/few redeeming qualities.

1 star... the absolute worst. cannot be improved or redeemed. how did the story get approved by the director/producer etc...???

5 Stars: Amazing. Made an emotional impact on me that lasted with me long after the credits rolled.

4 Stars: Great. A solid series with few flaws.

3 Stars: Decent. An ok series that has some flaws with characters, story, animation, etc.

2 Stars: Bad. A bad series that has only a couple redeemable qualities. Boring and dull. Some people may still find value.

1 Star: Terrible. A terrible series that has nothing good about it. Everything is bad and should not be viewed by anyone. A waste of time.

5 Stars: I enjoyed it enough to watch more than once and will probably not forget it in the next couple years.
4 Stars: I enjoyed it enough to watch more than once but I'll probably forget a lot about it after a while.
3 Stars: I enjoyed it but I'd probably not watch it a second time, and I'll probably take a few sessions to finish it the first time.
2 Stars: I didn't enjoy it, but with enough time and effort I might finish it.
1 Star: I gave it up after 3-5 episodes. Very few animes get a 1 Star rating from me. I can't think of any off the top of my head.

As you can see, I base all my ratings solely on how much I enjoy a series. I watch anime for entertainment and I'd rather not get nitpicky about potential flaws and whatnot.
