Best-Looking Anime?
Posted 1/13/15
This is obviously a subjective question as anime has many different styles, but in your opinion what is the best looking anime you've ever seen?

I would say something like Fate/Zero comes pretty close.

Oh that one show I never got past episode one with where the people lived under the sea and the kids were coming on land to go to school.. It looked absolutely stunning but I couldn't get into it.

In my opinion,

Best art style- 5 Centimeters Per Second, AKA "5 wallpapers per second."

Most beautiful animation- Nagi no Asukara. Hanasaku Iroha is a close second.

Fate/Stay Night: UBW has most fluid and detailed action, but I'd hardly call it beautiful to be honest.

Taking it in the context of its time period the film adaptation of Akira is among the first examples that come to my mind of candidates for "best looking", which I take to mean assessing the work based on its animation quality and the quality of its illustrations. I suppose another solid example would be Castle in the Sky. Why are these ranked so high? Well, they're feature-length films and so had the budget to blow on animation. For an example of a television series I'd point to Neon Genesis Evangelion (at least until the money ran out).

The anime that I've found myself thinking, 'I really like this art style' for the most is actually Garo. I think it's hit some soft spot because it reminds me of the shows and movies from the 80s that I watched growing up. Even the cgi works for me in that show because it's pretty much only used for the armor, which is supposed to stand out and be strange.

While the most used animation style for Madoka Magica wasn't anything special to me, the scenes used for the witch battles were rather artful. Nicely carried across how the witch's area warped reality a bit. I particularly liked the shadow play like battle.

Mushishi is also one that I like the art for. The backgrounds are lovely. The part marine, part ethereal look the mushi have is probably my favorite part of the visuals of that show.

1. Monogatari series
2. Death note (If you consider the fact that it came out in 2006, it looks incredibly good)
3. Attack on titan
4. Chihayafuru
5. Your lie in april
