Radical Dreamers, the little known second game in the Chrono Trigger franchise, was a VN for the Super Famicom(SNES), but was never released ouside of Japan other than fan translated emulations. It follows an alternate universe Serge and his companions Kid and Magus, on Kid's quest to get revenge on her nemesis Lynx by stealing the Frozen Flame. Many of the core characters from Chrono Cross were originally presented in Radical Dreamers. I played this game on an SNES emulator probably about a decade ago, before I even really knew what a VN was.

My first VN was Clannad.

And it is my last one too. lol
I guess I made the mistake of watching the anime multiple times first before ever playing it. As much as I love Clannad and how it was my favorite anime at the time, the VN itself was just really long for me, personally. Most of it wasn't too bad though.

Which VNs did those screenshots come from?

Also, the holiness that is Steins;Gate would be my first, unless Ace Attorney counts.

P.S. Do you know if there is an English translation of Oreimo VN and where you can get it?

the first picture is from fate/stay night UBW route......the second pic is from fruits of grisaia

Hmmm my first VN that i played is actually fairly recent and it is thanks to Crunchyroll
It is Phoenix Wright : Ace Attorney Trilogy

I saw it on Crunchyroll Homepage like a month ago and i figured i could use a new game on my 3DS that is collecting dust and when i finished downloading it, it is a like a big black hole that sucks me in. I just finished the whole franchise yesterday. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. ( Execpt for Ace Investigation 2 which is fan translation only and i am trying to figure out how to get it )

Phoenix Wright : Ace Attorney
Phoenix Wright : Ace Attorney Justice for All
Phoenix Wright : Ace Attorney Trial and Tribulation
Apollo Justice : Ace Attorney
Phoenix Wright : Ace Attorney Dual Destinies
Ace Attorney Investigation : Miles Edgeworth

Now if only i could yell Objection at the top of my lung without bothering other guys in the dorm.

If it counts, I believe it was Phoenix Wright though PW/GS kind of blurs the line a bit between old school adventure and VN. Still good though.

If you don't count PW I guess you can say Katawa Shoujo but I dont recall if I played any sort of VN before PW. Memory is hazy there.

Hmm well PW series is half detective half lawyer game. Most cases starts out with you being getting a client to defend then you start investigating the crime scene and collecting clues The first few cases of the game usually shows you who the killer so it sort of ruin the investigation part but you still got to collect clues and evidence for prepare for your defense which can be annoying sometime since you might had missed a clue and the game won't advance until you find the last clues. After finding all the clues you then advance to the court phase where you have to defend your client from the prosecution by pointing out contradiction ( some of them can be really hard to find unless you are super observant ) and then turn the tables on them and accuse the real murderer who always happen to be someone from the witness or even the prosecution sometimes. Only in Court phase, you can get game over since in court cases, presenting wrong evidence or accepting prosecution's theories can lead to game overs. As KisaiGate mentioned, PW did blur the line since it require a lot more input from the player, but the dialogues and court room phase are all VN style.

There is loads and loads of character in the franchise and each with their wacky personalities. Witnesses include clown who can't tell a funny joke, parrot, Wright's ex-friend, police chief, CEO and many others. Prosecution is even more ridiculous, a bratty genius who whip everyone in court ( including the judge ), coffee addict with cool mask, Death row convicted Samurai, super star.

The localization team have a great job at localization too, there are many shout outs and reference to western culture in the game so you will usually get a good chuckle if you spot them.

Hmm so i would say if you enjoy a comedy VN that rely more on your observation and debating skill rather than luck then PW series is a game you might want to check out.

If you have a 3DS then you can get every game in the series. Since there is Phoenix Wright Trilogy which contain the first 3 game of the series ( only available as digital ), Apollo Justice : Ace Attorney ( new main character, Phoenix still appear sometime ), Phoenix Wright Dual destinies ( only available as digital ). Then there is the spin off i mentioned in my original post.

I played Tales to Tiara II recently, if you consider that a visual novel. I liked it a lot.

Long Live the Queen. I enjoy it very much. Became queen a few times, but I'm still finding the different ways to die and the other endings.

Clannad.

I saw the anime recommended a few places, but when I saw that it was based on a VN, I decided to give the game a try before I watched the show. I was also a bit curious about VNs, having heard about them but never played one (in fact, it was one of the few kinds of games I've never played). So, I downloaded a torrent client (which crashed my computer in a way that took 3 hours to fix) and then downloaded the fan-translated version of the game.

It took me a little while to get into it, but once I read Kotomi's ending (the first main heroine good end that I finished), I was completely hooked. I powered through the rest of it over the next could of days, then immediately downloaded Kanon and started watching the Clannad anime.

Since then, I've absolutely loved the genre.

I've played Long Live the Queen, Sunrider, and If My Heart Had Wings (which is my personal favorite) one of the 5 playthrough's can literally take 15-18 hours if no skipping is done.
