Isn't the term "shit taste" from 4Chan? I'm a lurking who visits MAL, Crunchy and 4Chan and I mainly see that being used at 4Chan. MAL seems decent, not perfect but it's at an ok, meh level. Not at a toxic level. Crunchy has quite a good community going for it but it's no utopia. 4Chan is... well lets call it a "special" place. Every community is made up of different people, so you may not be used to the way things are there, I know I wasn't when I first entered the trash of the web..... I mean 4Chan. Just don't even worry about the negative's of each community. If someone ever insults your taste or anything about you, you are always given the option to either do something about it or not. Sometimes you should argue back, other times you have to realize that there's no point in doing so as it doesn't necessarily affect you.

tl;dr MAL ain't Toxic

I don't really see it, people there are just as opinionated as they would be on any other site that allows for opposing views and tastes; I'm sure sites like IMDB are worse.

I enjoy the services offered by MAL, don't always like how others use their services, but I go on my days utilizing their recommendations and reviews of animes/mangas to a degree. But I still have to agree with OP to some degree, I feel my opinion is more saturated on how other people make out of a show and how I should follow their mentality/suggestion of such given show/manga. Then again that is my own fault.

MAL is pretty tame compared to many other Anime communities. If you're looking for something a bit more friendly, check out the anime section on Reddit:

They're fairly respectful ... as are a few others where the crowd is a bit older.

The fact that MAL lists 4 different Gintama series in the top 10 anime list shows there's something wrong with its community.

Does not mean you should say them.

I for one think it is rude to insult other's tastes in anime.

And why not, that is 'free speech', is it not? If you can't take criticism you shouldn't be online.

Honesty is different than diplomacy. Just because it's not illegal, doesn't mean you should be free to do it. I for one think others have crappy taste, but I don't say anything, because it is rude and offensive. I can't spout my opinions, even online, unless I want others to look down on me for what I say. I reserve the right to judge, but it doesn't give me the right to knowingly offend someone else.

People are not always going to play by YOUR rules, play fair and nice, and use proper etiquette and discretion. The world is full of offensive people that aren't going to let you censor them. You can't police the world. Just avoid that place and stay off of there if it offends your sensibilities that much. But if you ask me you need some thicker skin. Good taste and consideration for others is very important, but If I let everyone who doesn't like what I like hurt me I'd likely be dead right now.

Consideation for others okay, but why on earth is 'good taste very important"? We watch anime to be entertained, the onlyt thing that is's important is that we watch the things we like. I love for example to love Ru, sword art online, and lucky star , just to name 3 anime which some people dislike, to death and even have merchandize of them. The only important thing is that I don't try to force it on people who don't like it.

Gintama is good, NGNL on the other hand...just my opinion One of the things I value highly about MAL is the diverse array of opinions. Some of the most popular animes that are highly rank have mixed reviews offering both sides of the story. SAO and NGNL are prime examples of this, as well as Code Geass. You get both sides of the story. And if an anime only has good reviews and a high score like Gintama, you can rest assure it is a quality show for most people. If not, then you're the minority.

The only problem is, is that people actually think their opinions mean something. They really don't.

I lurk around MAL sometimes. The maturity level of its users is quite entertaining. Which reminds me, it's time to check the Aldnoah Zero section to watch Inaho fanboys and (what's left of) Slaine fanboys rage hard.

I never tried to force anyone to like an anime before, so I wouldn't know. Good taste in the context it was used was implying an applied behavioural application, for instance adopting a higher standard of conduct would be in good taste

For instance. I'm not going to rail on an entire community on another site because of a recent trend and still hypocritically use their services like some are doing.

MAL is the only site i use that recommends hentai when i don't watch anything of the sort. Other than that i use their services to keep track of what i watch/read and rewatch. I don't really engage in community actions like i do here.

I'll be honest, I used to spend a lot of time on the MAL Forums, and I think its unfair to characterize the entire community there in that way. There are some very outspoken people who come off as abrasives, but there are also some caring souls who enjoy having a conversation about a hobby they mutually enjoy.

While I'd caution anyone to be careful until you've gotten to know some of them, there's a lot of sub communities, clubs, and anime fan groups within that rather large community.

I feel its not fair to characterize all MAL users as being that way, yet I know some who are.

Take it for what its worth.
