How does it making you feel when you read/watch a story with darker content? Something like Berserk, or Blade of the Immortal? Do you think these things have an impact on a person, perhaps even making them want to do things that are implied or portrayed, such as killing or rape?

Discuss!

Personally, I don't think it does.

I like it honestly. It gives the series grit. But making them want to do it? That is the bullshit the media says. People don't actually do that unless they have a mental issue

People tend to be easily influenced, but should be able to rely on their perception of right and wrong to discern whether their actions are justified. A violent show may put someone in a negative mood, but the viewer should be able to make an appropriate decision regardless. Anyone who watches a dark anime and fails to distinguish reality from fiction should be arrested and treated or dealt with in a more efficient manner.

I think the only people influenced into actually carrying out those acts of violence are ones who already have a propensity for violence.

I like it, but don't think most it is very well done. Some of it feels more like fan service, there to titillating gore fans and get attention.

If I could, I would like to kill a hundred armed men single-handedly while wielding a sword that's as long as I am tall.
I'm not really interested in becoming a demon and raping my friend's girlfriend though.

gratuitous darkness? meh.. It's like the kiddies that complain that CR is "too censored".

Story and mood dictate darkness more than violence.

Sometimes it works well. Tokyo Ghoul and Psycho pass were very good, and appropriately violent. But violence itself isn't "ZOMG TEH AWESUM!!!!"

As for how i feel afterwards? meh. doesn't affect my already black soul.

Dark content is actually kind of nice sometimes. Some days I just feel like watching A Clockwork Orange or Elfen Lied. I guess it might be nice to know that some else is pissed off and the world only makes sense when you make it.

Honestly I'm surprised more people aren't sociopaths. I do think the ones that are would be that way regardless of what they watch or read.
Some of my relatives went to church every Sunday, including Sunday/Bible school and they turned out to be some of the most useless flakes it has been my sorry misfortune to have known. Nature or Nurture?

I love dark content, but sometimes it can be to much. When I read a certain chapter of Berserk (you all know which one I'm talking about), I had to stop at each page for a couple of minutes because it was really hard to read. I turned out normal.

They make me question the Nihilism of the Author, though I prefer to read things that actually enjoy life.

Well, after watching Squid Girl, HenNeko, and YuruYuri, I needed a good dose of dark content, so I started watching BTOOOM!.

It's good to keep a balance after watching nothing but kawaii-desoo-ney sh!t.

EXACTLY! no sane human being goes from "normal" or "ordinary" to wanting to kill and rape based on what they saw on a show. Someone who is mentally ill probably does not understand that it is form of artistic expression (movies/shows/books) and not meant to be imitated.

This is also why court cases involving violent media such as video games and musicians have no ground...because someone who is sane wouldn't be led to commit rape, murder, or other atrocities.

Everyone has dark thoughts..those who put it down on anime might bring out your desires and on another separate position is you knowing the wrong from right.

I don't know...something to consider perhaps, how does hypnotherapy work?

Also you can flip it and consider good things you imitate or are inspired by.

And how blur the lines are between what's "dark" and what's "light"

What do you associate with the words "dark content"

A thread about the subconsious .. I'm used to these.. Being exposed to too much violence for instance can affect you in ways you're no longer aware, feeling as if you're "numb" to the experience makes you blind to the insidious nature of the self-harm you are racking up and progressively accumulating over the years.. when you get your limbs and friends blown off by charlie you won't feel numb anymore - thats an illusion to insulate you to your addictive habits.
