Arizona became the first state in the US on Thursday to enact a law requiring high school students to pass the U.S. citizenship test on civics before graduation, giving a boost to a growing nationwide effort to boost civics education. 15 more states are expected to consider it. I am against the core motive of this law (promotes nationalism/patriotism) but I believe this is a decent effort at making sure students, who are basically soon-to-become adults, know what the hell government actually is and how it is run.

I think Arizona legislators are concerned that immigrants maybe more educated the US citizens of Arizona and is trying to get more americans more involved in the voting process. Arizona has been pretty controversial when it comes to immigration and I think they have just learned to keep their plans on the low low. But on the face of it, I like the idea. I just hate the word "require"

Uhm... cool story bruh. Tell it again?
Actually, what is the question? How do we feel about it?

That's forced child labor! Someone call the OSHA! Spread the word: death to AZ gov't!

I'm sorry, what exactly is a civics test? They test how good you are at.... being a civilian??? And if students don't pass this, then they can't graduate?

Because they realise that legal immigrants that actually take citizenship tests themselves know a whole heck of a lot more about this country than the people that were born and raised here...

It's basically a citizenship test that contains questions on government, politics, history, geography, etc.

Well that's America for you, make them understand how great we are by forcing them to take a test. I'm against the idea because doesn't America teach their history anyway, what is the point in making them take a test on it, it'll hardly serve them well in life to know what happened years ago except if they were doing history.

I also hate how they must take this before graduation which seems to me like failing means re-taking.

Well, considering how much I've probably forgotten about civics, but have to face-palm on some of the nitwits who can't even answer simple questions, I'm all for it.
I was part of the Arizona educational system from K-12 and college, so if they want to make students smarter, I'm all for it.
As for immigration and any issues towards it, you're teaching the kids what they need to take the citizenship test now- 2 birds, one stone.
As for nationalism and patriotism, good. Welcome to the melting pot.
Maybe it'll get rid of internet politicians too.

Civics are the most important part of any education. Understanding your role as a citizen in this polity is absolutely essential for contributing positively to it.
