Hi All

I'm Cityhnter007,
I'm 52 years old, and live in Phoenix, AZ.
My first exposure to anime was, when I was three years old.
My dad was in the US Air force and was stationed in Japan.
Our Nanny was Japanese and would sit us down in front of the TV while she did housework.
The first show I remember was ASTRO-BOY and that was in Black and White.
We moved to the States a couple of years later and I remember watching Cartoons every Saturday Morning.
As I grew older, I discovered that I liked cartoons and I looked forward to seeing them when ever they aired, which was mostly after school and every Saturday Morning. At a very young age, I noticed that the cartoons they showed here in the states were quite different from what I remember in Japan. In Japan, the cartoons generally were episodic, meaning certain events or story lines carried from one day to the next. Here in the States, Cartoon shows like Batman and Superman were generally resolved in a matter of 15 minutes or within the episode itself, We also had shows like Buggs Bunny and Road Runner which seemed to have no plot line, just slap stick comedy or nonsensical chases.
Fast forward to my junior high school year and Voltron was introduced to regular TV ( my parents never subscribed to cable TV) and I experienced Deja'vu. This show that I had never saw before, had all the elements of familiarity
but was different than the Cartoons I had seen in the states A few years later and Robotech hit the air waves and I knew that this show originated in Japan. A few more years went by and through different associations, I discovered Japanimation. i found and joined group of like minded friends who had already formed a club here in Phoenix called The Phoenix Japanimation Society helmed by a remarkable man named Tom Perry, a Honeywell Genius who opened his home every Sunday for us to sit and watch anime, mostly in straight Japanese with no subtitles. Tom had a huge collection at that time and was making the transition from VHS and Beta Tapes to Laser Disc. Tom Perry and his friend Bruce Carlson, and the PJS were responsible for Subtitling a lot of the earlier Anime Programing that were being viewed at Scifi and Fantasy conventions across the country at that time.
I was blessed to be exposed to lot of really good anime Tv' series, OVA's and Movies at that time.
Years later the internet phenomenon exploded making anime more accessible than ever, and throughout the years I have seen lots of great shows and like my wife ( who doesn't watch anime) there have been times when I have become less enamored with anime or taken breaks from watching it all the time.
Never the less I still love it and I'm still a avid fan of it, and I marvel at how story telling has evolved over the years.

So On To The Big Question,
When did you discover that you loved Anime and it was going to be a part of your life forever and what are some of the TV shows, OVA's, Movies, or Manga, that helped you come to that realization?

Mine are easy :

I was17 years old, Some of the shows, that help make me an Anime Addict (though they may not had aired at the time) are as follows:

SDF Macross
Mobile Suit Gundam : War in the Pocket
Z-Gundam
Megazone 23
City Hunter all seasons and movies
Fist of the North Star or Hokuto no Ken
Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind
Fushigi Yuugi
Saint Seiya
Kimagure Orange Road
3X3 Eyes
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Escaflowne
Patlabor
Berserk TV

These are all anime classics that Anime fans should not miss

But more recently:

Attack on Titan
Appleseed
Ghost in the Shell
Knights of Sidonia
Unicorn Gundam
Kill la Kill
Garden of Sinners - All movies - Awesome
Fate Stay / Night Series - All
Sword Art Online I and II

I look forward to hearing your responses!!!!

I initially watched it because I saw a picture of it online and I thought it was mega magical looking... and then I signed up for this just yesterday, so I'm just an anime baby lol

I was 9 or 10. I was at my uncle's house and my older cousin didn't want to hang out with me, so my uncle found my cousin's VHS of Akira and just assumed that because it was animated, it was appropriate for me. He popped it in the VCR and left me alone.

The animation quality, mature theme, violence, gore and brief nudity were all things I'd never seen in animation. I had a new perspective and I wanted more. Fist of the North Star was the next anime I watched. I did watch some Robotech and Voltron before Arika. I enjoyed Voltron, but had no idea it was Japanese.

i fall in love with anime last year in August. My housemate watching SAO season 1. It hooked me and now i watch lot of anime. And we prefer romance genre. We rarely watching anime together but he will suggest some good anime to me. That's my housemate. :3 But i prefer action + romance. Recently we watched some slice of life genre and it was good.

Since the owner of this thread ask to put our age. Me and my housemate we are 19.

I used to watch anime when i was around eight years old or so was the first time i saw an anime. I watched Digimon, Pokemon, And Yu-Gi-OH! But then i stopped to focus on school and all that stuff, But when i really Fell in Love with Anime was during my time in the army, due to the stressfull environment, my best friend and also my roommate loved anime and said to me hey lets watch Eureka 7! i had no idea what the hell he was talking about so i said sure. so i was watching it and it was ok by my standards but at the same time broke up all the stress and blandness around me so i figured what hell? ill try anime, First one i ever watched, The Pet Girl Of Sakurasou then i became instantly hooked! pretty much every other day after work (or when i had the free time or access to a computer) i would watch anime. toradora, black bullet, etc. My best friend always makes suggestions and i watch them and i make suggestions even he hasnt seen before! I mainly watch slice of life and romance animes. But im interested in all types for the most part. just my favorite is slice of life and romance. I personally never thought i was ever going to watch or like anime so this caught me by surprise! I really want to visit Japan as well!! Anime is just a wonderful escape and just plain fun world to be in! Really glad my roommate showed me anime! Its really hard to pick some of my favorites cause so far the ones that i have watched are all pretty good but here is just a few: Toradora (easy choice for me my all time favorite romance comedy) Pet Girl (made me realize my love for anime) Black Bullet, Celestial Method, Love Lab (amazing comedy) Golden Time, Tari Tari, Akame Ga Kill! etc

When I was a kid I wa watching anime without even knowing it was anime: I grew up with Saint Seiya, DB/DBZ, Captain Tsubasa and Ranma 1/2. Then stopped during my teens, but around 17 I saw Naruto and it hooked me and went from there, what made me expand my anime world was Death Note and now I'm a proud anime fan.

Funny tho, Naruto and Death Note are not even in my top faves lol. The ones I grew up with I do hold tem near to my heart.

I'm going to be honest here, I don't really read any of other people's posts, I just came here to vent out my experience. Anyway, I guess I always loved anime, simply because I was always watching cartoons when I was younger (Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Toon Disney, etc). But when I was in Korea for Summer Vacation, most of the cartoons there was Anime (few which I have heard of from 4kids or Toonami). But I always knew them as "Cartoons that were shown in Korea" and while I enjoyed it, it didn't make me love anime exclusively, it just fed my love for cartoons.

A few years later, I grew out of my cartoon watching phase and mostly just played video games. I was always a military and firearms nerd, so when my friend introduced me to Full Metal Panic, I was just blown away by the level of detail they put in the guns and equipment, and that really got me hooked. At first I tried watching strictly action/comedy, then I allowed for some romance, then I didn't totally need action in a series to make me enjoy it, and now I'll watch just about anything I think is good. My favorites I can come up with.

Full Metal Panic!
Ao No Exorcist
Beelzebub
Library War
Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo
Crayola Shin Chan
Love Lab
Ika Musume
Survival Game Club!
Girls und Panzer

War in the pocket was so good.. but very sad

I watched all the stuff on toonami back in the 90's-early 2000's. Then i thought i was "too cool" for afew years untill i randomly saw an episode of naruto one night (it was the Chunin Exams(1st stage). I started watching it then gradually got back into it.

I remember seeing different anime on 4Kids and KidsWB when I was about 8 or 9; however, at the time I didn't know it was anime and I really didn't watch them that much. I saw little blips of Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and whatever else was on at the time, I just never really watched or got into them. The only ones I do remember having some interest in (although I didn't watch them much either) was Megaman Nt Warrior (because my brothers were watching it) and Magical Do Re Mi (the Americanized version of Ojamajo Doremi).

It wasn't until I was 12 that I got into anime. I remember my mom asking me to tell my brothers to take the garbage out and when I went to go tell them, I walked in on them watching Yu Yu Hakusho. In particular, I walked in at the end of the Kurama vs. Karasu fight and I was instantly hooked, and I partially think that's because my first anime crush was Kurama. But, ever since then I've been watching anime and reading manga (Fruits Basket was my first and is my all time favorite manga). I'm pretty sure at this point I've watched more animes then my brothers have (only because I'm more into anime and manga than they are).

Up until I would say I was 13 or 14, I never really took Anime seriously. I always saw it as a cheesy medium for adult/teenage material. I was one of those kids in grade school that would judge the "Narutards" and the "Yugi-Nerds". Even Dragonball Z was never a blip on my screen to be honest. And I saw Pokemon as more of a game than an Anime.

It was my transition period from Middle School to High School that I really started to appreciate and enjoy the Anime world. The series that got me hooked was Code Geass. Admittedly Season 1 wasn't perfect, but R2 really shifted my mental focus. I immediately went from series to series trying to discover more. Just to name a few in the first year alone...

-Trigun
-Cowboy Bebop
-One Piece
-Full Metal Alchemist (Not Brotherhood)
-Full Metal Panic! (Including Fumoffu and Second Raid)
-Evangelion
-Shakugan no Shana
-Toradora!
