i figured with all the hype and reverence to sailor moon there'd be a bigger budget/better story/execution values. i loved the manga and the first anime as a kid, but couldn't enjoy this series for some reason :|

I prefer the overall fun loving vibe of the older version. This one feels a bit too serious for its own good.

It is not the fault of the manga, it is the fault of sh*tty TOEI.

The manga could be great, but just transferring it to animation won't guarantee it will be as good. That's really all i mean. I don't know about blaming TOEI, but the adaption is pretty lifeless.

Yeah, it's closer to the manga, but the execution was lacking. It's like if you had an amazing speech written up and someone read it completely in monotone and didn't put any effort into it.

That's why nothing is guaranteed. As long as the original with differences was enjoyable, then people can be content with that.

This is how I feel. I was an avid fan of Sailor Moon in the 90s when it was on toonami. So I watched it before I even knew what manga was. But I later realized that the show I loved was full of fillers and wasn't all that true to the story, BUT I loved it anyway. It's what got me into anime in the first place. And when I heard about a remake in 2012! I was amped, but then when it didn't get released till last year, my excitement was dulled. I did start reading the manga and when I started watching SMC, my excitement came back up. But with the 2 year wait, the crazy schedule, and some piss poor animation, I didn't really enjoy it as much. Especially since I kept hearing about how they were going to keep the generals alive and fit in the romance between the generals and the senshi. To me, none of the characters really have any, well character. The character development wasn't there for this as much as the 90s version. Now I like Mamo chan better in SMC, but that's about it. And I really wanted to love this, but I just couldn't. And maybe it's a bit of nostalgia on my part. Like when they find out Usagi is the princess, I can still only think of the 90s version with "My Only Love" lol. And the re dub of the original didn't make it any better, the re dub to me is just shitty. I know the original dub was bad but, I didn't know it was bad at the time. And the fact that Moon didn't get a new transformation pissed me off too . Ok rant over

nay

i just don't really feel anything for the characters. They have absolutely no depth to them, which makes the whole friendship thing seem so cheesy.

This is the second show I've watched by Toei, and their animation is really shoddy in both. I don't understand why they can't do better.

Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A thousand times yay!

As someone who was a kid during the 90s that saw the english dub of Sailor Moon, this is just lovely to watch. It brings back so many memories of how much I loved watching it week to week as a kid. I'm really glad they came out with Sailor Moon Crystal. So many things make more sense now. I had no idea how disjointed the first anime really was. And I'm glad I can watch this show in the Japanese language it was meant to be seen with. At first, I didn't care for the animation (the Sailor Scouts looked way too skinny to me), but now I find myself loving every aspect of the show. I really enjoyed how they ended this first half. I'm kinda sad we have to wait an extra week more than usually for the next episode. I'm not ashamed to say that I'm a 30 year old guy who loves Sailor Moon. I keep hearing how Crystal is a closer adaptation to the manga. I guess this means I need to finally read the manga lol.

I'm gonna have to give it a nay.

I felt the way it treated the characters made them seem pretty dull. They don't give enough time for them to breathe and be themselves for a bit. I'm not asking for fillers, but more scenes that would attach me to them. Crystal rushes the plot too much for me. And I'm usually blind to animation mistakes and censors (I didn't notice half of the black screens in Tokyo Ghoul, that's how blind I can be), but for some reason, I saw a lot here. Maybe it was because there was an extra week between every episode, I thought they had that much more time to check for errors or something. Extending the episodes to 45 minutes would make up for the 2 week wait at least too. And this is a minor nitpick on my part, but nothing replaces Moonlight Densetsu!

The promotional visuals looked so good too -_-

it's like they spent 90% of their budget on the promo visuals. the animation as a whole was pretty bad.
the last parts in episode 13 simply screams QUALITY animation

Did you read the manga? It is flawed yes, but it is an amazing series, especially (in my opinion) the final arc which becomes a cosmic horror story. Anyway, like you said there is no guarantee that an adaptation would be good....But what TOEI did is pretty damn low on the bar. Sailor Moon has an amazing basis and series; all TOEI had to do was adapt from a well versed source! But even that proved to be too much.

TOEI has to be blamed, because so many of their animations are shit. They're a piss poor company who seek to make money the cheap way - and it shows!

The manga is one of the best selling manga of all time. The classic 200 episode anime one of the most beloved and memorable even so many years later. The fault of Sailor Moon Crystal lies not with Sailor Moon, but with the company that chose to adapt it.

Total Yay! Even though there were some parts about it I didn't like over all it was so wonderful to me. People had HUGE expectations for it. Like even though the original is great and all I can't sit down and really watch it anymore like I used to because I hate filler. It's okay not to like it but I always here the same thing from Crystal haters where they say the animation was bad or the story or for whatever reason. Like it's okay for you not to like it but it's not okay to sit there a tear it to shreds. I could do the same thing to the original but I don't.

Agreed. But not all of us are like that. I don't think SMC is shoddy in and of itself, I just have a personal preference for the original, "imperfect" translation that is the original anime series. I hope to see it get to Saior Moon S and Super S (the third and fourth seasons), in spite of my reservations, and I never got to see Sailor Stars/ Sailor Starlights (although they're might(?) have been an anime adaptation).

No I know. There are some animes that I will never like nor get into because they aren't my cup of tea. Like that is totally fine

No, i didn't. When i said, the manga could be great but having a carbon-copy adaptation doesn't automatically make it good, it was a general statement. Anyway, TOEI does One Piece, so i'm pretty fine with them haha.

Hey, at least the original that had changes is liked by so many. Just proves that regardless of the differences from the original source, the anime can still be great. I should check out the original series FULLY one day, but this "Crystal" version was bad. I'm still 3 or 4 episodes behind. As soon as they started with the SenshixKnight crap, i couldn't watch anymore.

*GASPS* You HAVE to watch Sailor Stars, the final season of Sailor Moon. It's really excellent, darkest one and the most mature with a great ending. However the manga for it is just a total cosmic meltdown.

I say thee nay for this, but, as I have noted in the main thread for the show several times, I have never been a fan of the manga, and the first anime is one of my all-time favorites (because of the villains, the secondary characters, and literally every Sailor Senshi but Sailor freakin' Moon and her Mary Sue kid). SMC is its own thing, but I am going to hold final judgment until I see how it does the Black Moon arc. That could be amazing.

On Sailor Stars, set to be released in the U.S. for the first time in the relatively near future: It really is one of my favorite seasons, and it is noteworthy for the changes it makes to the cast (e.g. no Chibi-Usa at all after the first arc). My only gripes are that the last stretch drags on far too long (because they wanted to make it to Episode 200, and you can definitely tell), and that the Outer Senshi are poorly characterized at the end.
