I would like some suggestions for some really great anime from what I assume would be the best place to ask, forums devoted to it. I'm going to explain my history with anime a little, and the kind of anime that I love to better give you an idea at what type I enjoy, so I apologize in advance if it comes out long winded.

So I am recently getting back into anime after a very long hiatus. I initially got into anime probably roughly ten+ years ago, when Toonami was around, and they played things like Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and Rurouni Kenshin. I absolutely loved all of these animes, I was pretty damned obsessed with Rurouni Kenshin my freshman year of college. However, I never reached far outside my comfort zone with anime, and once Toonami ended, I stopped watching.

Well now I just recently got a Vita, and decided to try some Jrpg's, which I am a newbie at as well, and fell in love again with the anime style that these games had. I got Persona 4 Golden, then became obsessed with it, got all the games, the animation, and that got me interested in anime again. So I checked Netflix for a starting point, and on a whim started watching Sword Art Online. It immediately grabbed my attention, and I blew through the 25 episodes in a couple days. I came here and got the premium membership so I could watch the rest.

So about my tastes. I enjoy a variety of settings: Fantasy, Dystopian Future, Cyberpunk, hell, even high schoolers if it involves some interesting plot like Persona did. With that said, I do prefer some conflict, a little action to break up the drama or comedy. I am also a sucker for sappy romances. I don't know why, but I'm a guy that can't get enough love story plots, It's one of the determining factors on whether I will play a videogame now. If it doesn't have some semblance of romance in it, I probably won't play it. It's weird, and probably says more about my character than I'd like to admit, but there it is, I'm a hopeless romantic.

So I love anime like Rurouni Kenshin, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Sword Art Online. Don't particularly care about the setting as long as the plot is good, and there is a mixture of action and drama/comedy. And I love a good romance plot. Anyone have any good suggestions for me after I finish up Sword Art Online?

FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
(not on Crunchyroll, widely considered to be one of the best animes ever made, sadly you JUST missed it being on netflix since it ended on the 15th. Action with some comedy and drama. Watch the dub.

Gurren Lagann Crazy mecha anime that escalates to higher heights of craziness than you ever thought possible. Action/comedy. Watch the dub.

Attack on Titan instant cult classic the subject of absurd amounts of hype over the past couple years.

(not on Crunchyroll, -Best scifi thriller anime out there. Watch the dub.

That should cover the most popular and well rated anime that roughly fall into your tastes. Although I'm pretty sure you will find your tastes changing after watching newer stuff.

Also since you like romance, I cant help but recommend the best rom-com on crunchyroll, Toradora Although theres pretty much no action, still you might find that you dont mind it.

Hunter x Hunter is Adventure/Action long running anime, if you ever watched YuYu hakushow the same author I believe.
Btooom Has a interesting Plot, not nesseraly trapped in a game like SAO but more like the game became reality.
Hamatora Is pretty "nice" (It's a pun if you watched the anime you'd get it) Kinda detective like with a twisted antagonist.
The Kawai Complex Guide to Manors and Hostel Behavior Is a nice Romantic Comedy
Parasyte The Maxium Is baised off a older manga and it's action based, just watch the first episode you'll probably like it
Monthly Girls' Nozaki-Kun Is a very fun Romanic comedy
Akame ga Kill is a nice Dysutopian type anime thats based around assassins trying to take down an empire.
No.6 is also a nice dysutopian based anime however it's slow paced but picks up more as you go on
My Mental Choices are Completely Interfering with my School Romantic Comedy is a harem comedy that I thought was just plain funny
Seitokai Yakuindomo Is a comedy worth watching if you dont find sexual jokes off putting
The World God Only Knows just watch it!

Yea these are good ones to start off with that are quite likeable, hope you like some of these.

12 Kingdoms. Hands down the best fantasy anime and light novel series. Especially if you want amazing character development, world building, social commentary, epic fantasy world, multiple view points, action, adventure, magic, mystery...

Don't get annoyed at the main character (Yoko) and give up. She starts off as one of the worst characters ever, but when character development hits her like a speeding train she grows to be one of the best characters I've ever come across.

Just watch the fucking show bro and read the novels.

Also some that come to mind:

Sailor Moon (absolute classic)

Maison Ikkoku (best romance series, still voted favorite in Japan after all these years...I prefer the manga though and don't be turned off by the 80's art)

Paranoia Agent

Neon Genesis Evangelion + End of Evangelion (mindfuck classic)

Fullmetal Alchemist (original series)

Puella Magi Madoka Magica (fantasy, extremely dark and tragic take on magical girl series, modern classic)

Hunter x Hunter

Naruto (ONLY the first series, NO fillers very enjoyable)

Serial Experiments Lain (mindfuck, classic)

Revolutionary Girl Utena (allegorical, psychological and theatrical mindfuck follow up with the movie Adolescence of Utena)

Now and Then, Here and There (dystopian future, other world, massive social commentary with tragic, brutal themes like child warfare, rape, blind militarization, dictatorship...etc)

Baccano! (absolutely awesome crime series set in America)

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (fucking classic syfy)

Monster (brilliant anime about a serial killer/ wannabe anti christ and the doctor out to get him)

Akatsuki no Yona or Ao Haru Ride for romances. For pure testosterone and action, look no further than Gurren Lagann. If you're looking for Manga and new, then try these titles: World Trigger, Nanatsu no Taizai, Shokugeki no Soma, and Boku no Hero Academia.

I highly recomend:
Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso (Your lie in april)
Chuunibyou Demo koi ga Shitai (Love Chuunibyo and other delusions)
Usagi drop
Angel Beats!
Gekken Shoujo Nozaki-kun (monthly girls' Nozaki-kun)

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is canonical.

Darker than Black is also a very good somewhat dystopic crime/action anime.

Baccano and Durarara (2nd season currently airing) are fantastic and might fit your tastes.

I really enjoyed Tiger and Bunny. Although it's got a very light buddy-cop tone, it's full of good action & character moment in a fairly ensemble cast.

Also, fully seconding the recs for Steins;Gate and - if you're into a teenage rom-com (which it sounds like maybe you won't be but hey) -Nisekoi.

e: oh also Gekkan Shoujo is totally fantastic, but is also a bit teen rom-comish, and plays on shoujo tropes enough that it might be better after having watched more shows.

Sorry if this is a bit longer than you'd like

Well, if you love Sword Art Online and some romance, why not a love story about swords? Katanagatari is about these two people, a strategist and a man who is literally a human sword collecting swords in historical Japan (yes, there's samurai and ninjas in this one!). Actually, this show is more heavy on the conversations and dialogue rather than the action, and the character designs is a bit...different. Still, excellent character development, and one of my personal favorite romance/historical/actions. 12 episodes that run 45 minutes ish each

I'm also gonna recommend Akame ga Kill. It's not a personal favorite, but it's not a bad choice to suggest to a novice (unless you don't like blood). 24 episodes

Another recommendation for Gurren Lagann if you want something EPIC! with a likable main cast, over the top action (not violent, over the top), and catch phrases that you will continue saying years from now. 24 episodes

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood would fit your quota, now that I think about it. This one is totally worth your time and has a bit of everything. 64 episodes and don't let the length scare you

And if you don't mind going out of your comfort zone (like a bit out of it), try the occult detective fantasy adventure that is Mushishi. It's about a world with beings called mushi that cause problems in the daily lives of normal people from some time period in Japan's past. There's a guy called Ginko who is like a travelling doctor/shaman/smoker/hobo/the GAP shopper who specializes in these cases and helps these people out for almost nothing in return. The series is episodic like Samurai Champloo in that the individual episodes don't affect each other much. The first season can be watched on Youtube on Funimation's channel (first 4 dubbed episodes and all 24 episodes subbed) and the second season is here on crunchyroll. 24 episodes first season, 20 second season, 2 specials, 1 movie on the way

Code Geass is a pretty default recommendation for a newcomer. Along with Death Note.

Personally speaking I'll add /durarara to the pile, it has a big cast of great characters doing crazy things.

And if you want romance in your shounen look no further than the airboarding mecha Eureka Seven.

Fate/Zero, Steins;Gate, Attack on Titan, Btooom, Kawai Complex, Code Geass, Parasyte, Monthly Nozaki, 12 Kingdoms, Baccano, Monster, Psycho Pass, Gargantia, Tari Tari.

Romance/comedy/ tragedy-ish x1 and I won't label it so it could be a surprise heh:

My Little Monster
Hotarubi no Mori e (movie)
Denki Gai
Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu
