I'm sort of in the same boat. Tried out Toradora but couldn't stand the midget girl. I can pretty much guess where the show is going to go, and I sort of dislike everyone besides the MC. Truthfully, I probably wont go back to it. Sorry to hijack your post, OP.

Good luck going through life calling everyone small a midget *Grumbles.

It's a character from an anime.

Lots of strong feelings in this thread.

If you're serious about it give Toradora! the 3-episode rule, you should get a feel for who everyone beneath their surface-level archetypes fairly quickly. The only one I had trouble with was Minori when she was in genki^10 mode.

If you're still tearing your hair out after three episodes you can quit, I really liked Toradora! though.

It's a fictional character from an anime. Chill out.

Just saying. I hope you wouldn't call an actual small person a midget. It has been deemed a slur this years.

You can, but you must support your decision. Anime is something you should enjoy in your free time, rather than forcing yourself to "enjoy". Hobbies are here to kill extra time, anyway. In the end, you have the freedom to watch whatever you want.

Thank you for all the responses everyone! I'm sorry I didn't really reply to anyone, I fell asleep right after starting this thread (it was 1 A.M.).

It's actually nice to see such varying opinions, it helps me see both sides to the opinions on this show since it seems many people share either my (couldn't stand it) or my friend's (favorite ever) viewpoints.

What I will take from this, is to give it it's 3-5 episode screening, and if I feel no progress and just straight up annoyance towards all or most of the characters, that will then be the sign to drop it. It seems I wasn't the only one who thinks Taiga's personality is borderline the worst of all tsunderes but I'll give her a chance at least and I'll also try to be fair and not expect absolute dere inquisition within the first 5 episodes. I do have a high tolerance for hell and stuff that literally makes me want to punch my computer, hence how I was able to finish School Days, and all of its OVAs.

Anyway, whether or not I'm able to change my opinion or it remains the same, thank you for your answers! I might not start it away anyway, so if there's any other discussion to be had, I'll actually be able to reply now. I still have to finish Maid Sama and the Pet girl of Sakurasano High too before i start anything new.

The biggest problem with Taiga is she falls into the class of "Shana Clone." An attempt to capitalize on the wild success of that character. (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ShanaClone) And while not all Shana clones are bad, she is, in my opinion. Like one person above said, if you don't like her I would drop it.

I've actually seen all 3 seasons of Shana and its movie, and I can say Shana successfully grew on me as a character. I know for a fact I hated her in the beginning because I wanted to stop watching it, but back then I had OCD and had to finish whatever I started. In the end though, I actually didn't regret it. And by season 3, I loved Shana, and it was Sakai Yuji that pissed me off lol.

Also even though it

which is more progress than most anime I've seen to this day, I couldn't find closure in that ending because I had no idea what the hell happened. Also might be because its been a year or 2 since I've seen it.

My favorite genre is romance animes and Toradora is one of my favorites/highest rated, so I would certainly say to reconsider watching it. (I watched with subs, Idk how the dub is)

So based on what had you drop it from episode one, I can tell you that Taiga does progress as a character quite a lot. However for quite a while at the beginning she is very, very tsun as you have noted and not very dere. The show really sparingly shows her dere side until towards the end when everything is coming to a climax (I guess to really maximize the display of her character changing). But the dere moments it does show her in while building towards the end are very, very good and will hopefully make you like her character.

In regards to the worry of inconclusiveness with the endings, that's more of an issue with the romance genre entirely lol. Romance animes, tend to always go with the whole "buildup to becoming a couple, and then end plot" instead of a "enter a relationship and grow plot". Toradora does follow the former, but it is one that is much more conclusive with where the relationships are at/going. **(There is a scene after the credits of the last episode that you have to watch, that I don't really understand how people could miss)**

Further there are some really fantastic scenes throughout the show (one towards the end with Minori that still makes me sad thinking about), and there is even a team nochance girl in the show you can route for if you really can't get behind Taiga. I also haven't seen everything they have made, but everything I've watched that was made by J.C. Staff has been above average-amazing, they really seem to have a knack for the romance animes.

Golden Time is also one of my favorites (that I see you have watched), and it is like the only romance anime I can think of atm that follows the "enter a relationship and grow plot". I guess Bakemonogatari (and all its other monogataris) also kind of follows that, although its not really a romance anime more of show about relationships between people with supernatural stuff involved. Chobits is also one of my favorites that more follows this style of plot, although it has a lot more with the "grow" part lol. Idk what I'm getting at now lol. Most of the romance animes just end by the people becoming a couple and it always pisses me off too lol. Also #teamOnodera, and dandere = best dere

Super Sidenote: Watch Sakura Trick if you are mad at all the other romance animes you've watched and are ok with yuri. You'll get everything you've wanted from all the other romance animes (besides a super conclusive ending) and you'll get it multiple times an episode.

Well if it does take her awhile to reach that almost pure dere side, I can only do my best then to try and get there. But from what it sounds, I'm gonna get more than just, "alright, he's OK, maybe I like him" and/or "I'll try harder next semester *cough Blue Spring Ride*" from the ending, and that was honestly my biggest fear of trying to return to this show: I get 25 episodes of bad attitude with nothing. But when it comes to last episodes now, I can guarantee you I watch after the credits until that replay button on crunchyroll appears because I'm hoping just to find ANYTHING that'd make me feel happier about the way it ended.

Also, I'm not someone who likes rooting for girls with no chance lol, I'm actually #teamTsugumi because I feel like that relationship is an ocean of opportunity between character relationships and interaction. But behind that, I'm actually #teamOnodera as well

I love those super cute, shy characters. and hell, she was kawaii enough to counteract Chitoge's tsun side.

But anyway, your reasoning is exactly why I love Golden Time so much, no matter what happened during the series. The perspective of being a relationship and dealing with the struggles, instead of trying to enter a relationship and dealing with the struggles, is something I want to see more of. Things like Golden Time and Clannad are rare (unless I'm searching in the wrong areas) and I'd hold Clannad After Story at the number 1 spot if someone gives me a reasonable explanation as to why the last 10 minutes of episode 25 (or 24) were dedicated to Fuko being an idiot. I also agree with you on Bakemonogatari. Even though I can totally ship Senjougahara and Ararararararagi, I got more from just regular friendship development than the actual relationship. Also that toothbrush scene is stealing the spotlight of many other great things that happened in that show. I haven't watched bast Nisemonogatari though, so any development or changes, I'm unware of.

And I don't mind Yuri, and i did give Sakura Trick a try. I never continued after the first episode though, probably because episode 1 gave me enough closure but also It didn't interest me at the time.

Both are excellent series. I'm waiting to receive my new Maid Sama (English Dub) Blu-ray in the next few days. I already had Maid Sama, but since Monica Rial did English voice of Misaki Ayuzawa I just had to order it.
