Yep, respect is earned, and it's something that will take modest effort to gain. There are some situations where extraordinary effort is required, but for the most part you will earn it simply by utilizing common sense more than anything.

I agree that respect is earned, not by default given. I'll show basic manors towards people, but if they do anything rude or something I find negative I don't waste anymore effort on them.

I think there's a neutral level that everyone should be entitled to when they first meet.
Not respecting someone doesn't necessarily mean disrespecting them.

I think it benefits us all to mutually respect each other until somebody proves themselves unworthy of it.

Respect is earned. Being nice or polite to someone does not mean you respect them. You have to show people that you are worthy of being respected. It is not something that can just be inherited automatically.

Respect, a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements.
choosing to respect someone, is a choice you make. As it is to disrespect; someone. As for how you earn respect first off and probably most important respect yourself, then try to be an honest hard-working person, someone people can look up to,and in time well you get it, just remember it's better to earn something then simply having it given to you. good luck

So I get it there's respecting someone for being a human being and respecting them as a person, did I get that right?

Respect as a group and respect as an individual.

Sounds about right to me.

I can't believe people still have no idea that there's a difference between respect and common courtesy.

I can't believe it's margarine.

It tastes like butter, but it's margarine!

Five years of smoking has left my taste buds completely dead.
