Do you choose to be a redneck or are you just born that way?

Honestly I don't think some can help it. (southern drawl) Now git the hell off my property!"
The gun culture , Honey boo boo, , and Duck Dynasty show us that they are increasing in popularity, especially in the (southern drawl) United States of America .The whole world makes fun of these people, with their aggression and sense of entitlement, and qute frankly they make America look like inbred cretins.

Sooooooo....Are you a redneck by choice or did you end up being cursed by God for having no choice in the matter? Be honest!

I imagine, as with all cultures, people are raised that way. They don't choose it, and they're not born like it, but being surrounded by a certain mindset encourages children to grow up with the same mindset.

is this a serious question? To be BORN a certain way is to say that you have a gene that consists of the observable characteristics that express & manifest "redneck" - YOU DO NOT HAVE A GENOTYPE THAT HAS SUCH THINGS; however, I suppose if you wanted to make some sort of scientific claim, it would have to be that we have a phenotype to be redneck. For those who don't know what a phenotype is; it is the organism's observable characteristics that come from both the genotype & the environment.

You are using linguistics as a means to define your definition of redneck. Your dialect is certainly a product of your environment, but I would consider dialect to be a minor portion of what a "redneck" would consist of. Typically I would stereotype them as someone who A) wears camouflage clothing often, including boots Prefers big jacked up trucks C) prefers country music D) drinks really crappy beer E) typically doesn't have high ambitions and is more simplistic in their approach to life.

If you are from the south and move up north; your dialect, interests, and behaviors will most likely shape to the new subculture you are exposed to, assuming you are there for a long period of time; that isn't to say that you lose all of your "redneck" interests or characteristics though.

One of the fun things I like to do to city-folk is play a game called "lights out" take them into the woods at night when it's dark and turn off the lights and go silent.

Holeeeeeeeey shit takes them about three seconds before they really start to panic!

Naw, just go buy a shotgun and relax next to a pond with a beer and you're good to go it seems.

...Dude. If you're getting at that ALL Southern people are like that, we're not. Not all of us are like that. I don't "TAWK LYKE THEEUS" or hunt or fish or eat game or any of those things. I'm not racist and I don't hate gays. I don't wear camouflage. I don't want a truck. Stop stereotyping people. Jeez. About the redneck thing... No. Kids AREN'T born that way. It's not really part of genetics.

Do you know what a redneck REALLY is? DO YOU? Simply put it is anybody who works outdoors all day and gets a tanned neck. Famers, lumberjacks, telephone and electrical linemen etc. How it got to be synonymous with southern hick is beyond me. Both sides of my family has farmers in it so I can be called of redneck stock. I take pride in it. I'm southern. Is the south perfect? Hell no. But no place is. Quick trivia quiz for you. When was Boston schools desegregated?

And as for accents it is whatever you grew up hearing. Nobody is born with an accent. As for the 'southern drawl' even in the south the accents are different. It's like saying that Chicagoan, New Yorker and Bostonian accents are all the same since they're northern. (sigh) I do not like Honey Boo-Boo, but I reserve my venom for her parents and family who raised her that way. Children are the products of what they learn both at home and at school. There is a book called Confederates in my attic. I don't know about Confederates, but I suspect I got more of these in my attic.
