Because lives in the real world are a thing

and someone casually knocking off your helmet by accident kills you...

SAO would actually be a GOOD environment for some people

1) Quadriplegics - instead of being trapped in a body that can not do anything and slowly dying, they could actually move and experience a life.
2) Some mentally ill people - instead of being locked up in a hospital as they can't cope with the real world, SAO could be a good escape for them, and their care would actually be easier on caregivers
3) if the nerve gear could help people see, hear ...I bet there would be some blind/deaf people who would be thrilled to live in an enviorment like SAO

Basically think of the Sleeping Knights .... they had a chance to live instead of just waiting in the real world to slowly die

I'm sure they had plans in the real world.

Not all gamers are hikikomoris, most of us have lives outside of gaming. It would suck if all of that was sudenly taken from me.

CUZ ITS NOT REAL. You can't see your family or any of that stuff. You're not legitimately holding your "girlfriend's" hand and it's just wrong.

The anime had a god concept but fucked it up with its shitty plot and lack of other characters development.

In the book it had more to do with survival. They reference repeatedly how the human body could be sustained for only a finite amount of time before it would die on its own. They were literally fighting against the clock until people began to die not from the game but from their real bodies giving out. If it wasn't for that I think a lot of them would have wanted to stay, hell, even Kirito and Asuna didn't really want to go back. They fought for those that did but would have been just as happy if they could have remained there forever.

This is a great question. I wish I could be in a real video game just as much as the next guy or girl.

Or anime...

But the reason we play video games is to to enter a world of imagination that can NOT be duplicated in real
love. Not to live within it...

To have an entire world and people gone from you? Thats powerful.

No matter how hard of a gamer you are. We can play games with danger without the danger.

I would fight to get out of SAO for sure.

Well their physical bodies where slowly dying away anyways... Kirito looked like crap when he finally got out am I right?

Just put yourself in their shoes.

Imagine you're going away to the Caribbeans for 1 week. Then suddenly you're forced to stay there for the rest of your life and live by the laws of that region... would you be happy to stay? or would you want to escape it?

Humans are claustrophobic by nature; we value our freedom more than anything else. (Even false freedom gives us a sense of... freedom as long as we believe it's true freedom)

P.S. Am not a fan of SAO. I'm just giving my philosophical take on the question (good question, By the way).

Because they could die. It still supposed to feel like real life, so they may be gamers but their not killers...

These were his real life classmates. Not just friends he'd made in game. He probably couldn't handle possibly going back to the real world alone. Or perhaps with the death of all of his very best friends - all within a very few moments - was more than he could handle.
