In fiction about wizards, witches and magic the good guys always learn good magic and the bad guys always have dark magic. In The Slayers, Lina Inverse specializes in dark magic and uses it to fight bandits, monsters and evil. What do you think, is there a connection between the moral bearing of magic users and the type of magic they choose to use?

No, I do not believe there is connection between the morality of magic users and their choice of spells. Usually it seems to be what they associate the elements with (ice with cold hearted/hearts of steel; Fire with quick to temper/energetic; etc). This topic reminds me of a discussion I had a long time ago about Star Wars. The conclusion of this discussion is that it would be possible for a Jedi to be on the light side and act based on his/her emotions.

Also, if I recall correctly, in many forms of media, Dark Magic = Offensive spells (Fire/lightning bolts); White Magic = Defensive spells (healing; barriers; etc.)

Star wars aside, I would also recommend to read the books of Trudy Canavan.
Dark/Black magic is only a matter of perspective.

Ive never understood why in any story, when someone learns some sort of dark magic, they are automatically the 'bad guy'?
Dark magic always seems to be stronger so surely it makes sense for the good guys to learn it too in order to defeat evil?
Then it wouldn't be light or dark magic, it would just be magic

Too lazy to learn anything new. Too lazy to remember some things I've already learned too. For instance breathing. I get tired of breathing on occasion.

Yeah, something like Mace Windu. I'd learn the bad guy stuff to be a better good guy.

I'm a trickster!

It's my specialty to blur thelines between good and evil. I'd totally use evil to do good and good to do evil.

My alignment's chaotic evil. I think i'd firstly use my black magic for evil.
