What's the best FREE drawing software for a computer?

I love drawing on Miiverse, I really do, but eventually I want to start getting into drawing with color and better shading. So my question is, what's the best FREE drawing software for a computer? I already tried drawing on a tablet, but it was too difficult and aggravating for me to continue. So should I attempt at drawing on a computer (I have a laptop, not a PC), or should I try drawing on a tablet again? And please don't recommend anything that would give me viruses. ^^'

gimp - free, lightweight

paint tool sai - 31 day free trial, ~60USD to purchase license (or free not-quite legally), lightweight

photoshop - whatever duration trial, expensive as fuck (or free not-quite legally), takes a good bit to run it properly

i wouldn't recommend attempting to using any of the three without a drawing tablet, pick up a cheapo wacom if you can

Definitely check out Gimp.

It is a bit of a learning curve (especially if you are used to Photoshop) but it can be powerful in it's own ways.
-One very nice advantage is that Gimp is Open Source. This fact keeps Gimp free and allows people to make any modifications they wish (which also happen to be free ) So if needed, you can modify Gimp to your tastes.

Some other software that are free (*note- never tried these)
-Inkscape (Vector graphics editor)
-Paint.net (had to look it up to remember the name, don't know much about it)

I would advise checking out Gimp first and giving it a decent amount of time (You can probably find video tutorials, if you hate reading like I do). Mainly because it has the most bells/whistles and is free (plus it can be even further modified).

Mac or Windows?

On Windows, I will say that Paint Tool SAI and openCanvas are both AWESOME, but not free. $60 for each I think, cheaper than Photoshop though.

You could also try Autodesk Sketchbook, I think it's free for the basic version. https://www.sketchbook.com/desktop
