Post Reply Military etiquette in Anime and Manga

Somewhat related: My dad's in the national guard. He's been in it for about 22 years and I recall him saying "I don't plan on retiring. I'm gonna keep on working until they kick me out." I'm very proud of him. ^^

On the topic: I can see your point... But it's anime, and no form of media is going to realistic. Sorry to say that.

Artistic license, folks.

But hey - that info you supplied was super interesting, so thanks.

As others have noted, it's just a show, however, I too have a military background (US Air Force) and I admit, every time I see some sort of wonky, bass-akwards "military" process. Most of it is so laughably bad that I have to force myself to remember that it is just a show created by people that may not necessarily have the background (nor upbringing) that I do. Air Force regs about saluting is slightly different than in the Navy, so there will likely be some differences in my experience (for instance, anytime you enter and post while an Officer is at their desk, you salute, cover or not).

Quick question: People have told me that Macross (at least some of the later iterations, I really wouldn't count on much from the 80's series, but something like Macross Zero perhaps) did a fair amount of research into the current military fighter jets of its time. As an Air Force man, how do you feel watching something like that?

As a US Army Vet who has served in joint force commands with the Air Force, I would say that Macross keeps very close to flying conventions.

The big one is they use English over the radio when talking between control and the craft. You can hear it in:
(List from memory)
Macross: SDF (First TV series)
Macross DYRL (Macross movie based off SDF)
Macross Plus
Macross Frontier (TV and movies)

The one they most likely did the military research for is Macross Plus (where two different defense contractors where trialing different new Mecha/Fighters for)

Excellent. Macross plus was one of my favorites of the franchise.

Thanks!

Thank you for your service!

Agreed; Macross Plus had phenomenal radio chatter throughout it and their attention to detail was spectacular. It truly is one of the better Macross-related OVAs/Series.

Though, outside of the Harmony Gold snafu, well, I'm huge into Mecha, especially transformable Mecha that turn into aircraft that look suspiciously like the Northrup-Grumman F-14 "Tomcat." Macross made the design cool well before Top Gun in my opinion.

On a side note, Gasaraki has some solid military chatter throughout it and although the show is just plain weird, I enjoy it. Anyone have any recommendation for good anime that showcase military action (whether on Crunchyroll or otherwise)? More so than just the atypical popular series out there. Would be nice to see more of it if I could.

I won't lie, I am actually a bit surprised at the response this thread has received; I didn't think that it would draw as much attention, so I am glad to see so many posts here.

A thanks to everyone here who has served!

I am a huge Macross fan and the mention of Harmony Gold kinda burns me up :)

For a good airforce type anime, I would suggest an older title that I really enjoyed
Area 88

Others:
Macross Zero

As my big genre favorites are Mecha and Music (which is why I so love Macross) I know there are more military titles out there, just can't think of any others at this time

I don´t really care about the techno-babble, but man I have to say I really like the clothing choices militaries in anime often seem to have for their members!! XD (strike witches, kancolle, vividred, ...)

This is always the risk of using institutions like existing armed forces in one's works: your ability to take liberties is somewhat limited. These institutions already have well-defined behavioral standards, uniform codes, and rank structures. They already have specific equipment which they put to use, laws members are expected to follow, and so on. There would be no point in outright stating that the force you're representing your characters in is the US Navy when you're not making that force representative thereof. You'd be better off just basing it on the US Navy or some combination of navies without actually calling it any of them rather than just pretending that those conventions don't matter.

Now, that doesn't mean you have to show all your characters as members in good standing of these institutions which follow the rules to the letter and always do exactly what they're supposed to. You can have your main character wearing their service bars wrong or at inappropriate times, you can have them show up to places they need to have uniforms on without them, you can have them wearing a funny hat instead of an appropriate cover, you can have them drinking and smoking in basic. There's plenty of room for comedy and exploration while still respecting the setting, but you need to have your straight men ready to act as such and your setting prepared to back them up.

Let's finish up with some contrast by looking at an example where the rules aren't actually as rigidly set and one is nearly (emphasis: nearly) free to do as one pleases. There's some problems with the Full Metal Panic! anime, but the rank structure, demographic composition, conventions, laws, and equipment of Mithril aren't among them. They're a fictional private military organization, they can structure themselves, equip themselves, and behave more or less however they want. Where things get sticky is their relationship with actual entities like the UN, Japan, and so on. Mithril doesn't really seem to worry all that much about international maritime law from what I remember, and I don't actually recall that ever proving to be a particularly big problem for them. One might argue that this sort of thing wasn't the point, and that Full Metal Panic! was supposed to be sort of like The A-Team and just follow a bunch of cool mercenaries around a crazy world. I'd even agree with that to a large extent. But I don't even remember them having problems with the Japanese navy for breaching their territorial waters without permission or sending personnel to operate within their borders (I think they didn't have those permissions, anyway?). That wouldn't have to be the focus, but it is a part of the backdrop which seemed to be conspicuously missing. Then again, I may just have not seen the series for too long.

Really? A lot of the time I see too many similarities between anime military uniforms and SS-Style uniforms circa 1940's Germany. A part of me is a bit put off by them, though, even I can admit Hugo Boss is one heck of a fashion designer. Done aren't so bad, and given history I can look beyond most anime uniforms, though Admiral Gloval's uniform is quite sharp. Probably one of my favorites. I am also quite good of the uniforms in Ginga Kikoutai: Majestic Prince. Specifically Suzukaze Rin, though, not keen on her hair touching her collar...

Still, some shows have some decent designs, others not do much.

Yeah, some animes seem to make military academy graduates become privates instead of commissioned officers. They also seem to greatly underestimate how highly ranked skilled pilots usually are.

Also, they tend to draw the U.S. Flag wrong on uniforms and vehicles. The union always goes toward the front, so the flag should appear "reversed" on the right shoulder of a uniform. Minor detail, I guess.

I always appreciate the few shows that seem to have done their research.

hmm well idk it's anime, it's fantasy, but sometimes too much unrealism makes it less enjoyable to watch (or more cuz you can make fun of it lol)

either way, thank you OP, and others who've posted, for your service
