Something I Noticed in One Piece

So I was watching some One Piece episodes and noticed something a little strange. I'm sure anyone familiar with the anime/manga knows how continuity is a huge factor in the show. Conqueror's Haki being introduced during the first episode with Shanks and the sea monster as an example.

What I was wondering about was from the same episode, but showed as a recap in the Water 7 arc. Nobody really knows a devil fruit's power until they try it, unless it happens to be a fruit that has a recorded description. With that in mind, why did Shanks know what fruit was in that box before Luffy got to it? He called it a Gum Gum fruit right away, before Luffy showed signs of change.

Do you think it could be a bigger plot device later? He may have been getting it for someone. I say this because he probably would have just eaten it himself if he wanted it. Perhaps someone that knows how to use the Gum Gum fruit in a way Luffy hasn't discovered yet? The only devil fruit collector we've really seen so far in the series is Black Beard, but he's also old enough to have been involved in events from back then as well.

Who knows, it's just strange and not sure if anyone else can maybe add on to this little plot device. It could also just be a weird plot error that the creator never noticed as well.

Shank could have killed the previous owner of the fruit and taken it from her/he.

Bit of a late reply but in the show when a devil fruit holder dies, their fruit reappears somewhere in the world ><If your not caught up till ep 630 dont read this spoiler>>>
.

This has led to a encyclopedia of some sort being created (it has been mentioned/possible shown once in the anime) of fruit that have appeared. So its possibly that Shanks was told by someone what it was or read about it.

Additionally, its a low-level fruit. The bearers arnt exactly intangible elementals here, just rubber. Swords and knives work just fine at killing them, the same as fire and general drowning.

We may one day see/learn of the fruits owners before Luffy, but its not truly relevant. Just assume they died a buncha and prople know the more common fruits easily.

I remember during the Thriller Park arc Sanji mentions reading a book about the Devil fruits. That's how he knew about the Invisibility fruit. Black Beard also mentions a book, and that he memorized what the Darkness fruit looked like just in case he ever found it.

so somewhere out there is a Devil Fruit encyclopedia with illustrations

When Shanks stole the Gum-gum fruit it could have been labled in someones collection for all we know. There are bound to be Fruit Collectors out there who just box the things in glass and never let anyone touch them. Rich people are weird that way

I get the feeling the fruits play a bigger role to the one piece treasure. I also get the feeling that there's more to the fruits, since there's more than one of the same sort.
