As per vigilantism, I am also torn. I PREFER having a law system as we do. People should be innocent until guilty. and they all deserve a fair trial. It IS better to let someone guilty go free than hang an innocent so to speak.

But on the flip side, I think that fear is necessary to keep people in line. It's kinda the basis of Death Note, Batman, and the aforementioned Ozymandias (and his squiddy aliens). It's not the way I wish it was, but people are opportunists. if they think they have a good shot of getting away with something they'll do it. Repeatedly. Create something that instills fear, create a "boogieman" enforcing justice, and it appeals to our basest forms of morality, and keeps us from doing it....

But then again, do we always want to appeal to simply the basest parts of human motivation.

In most "organized" governments i'm against vigilantism - primarily because i'm against the notion of people disregarding the law with the intent to dole out "justice". It just seems like mob rule to me. Trust the system to do it's job, or else try to reform the system. Don't just ignore it and do as you please unless it's massively corrupt.

I'm kind of reminded of when I had to read Lincoln's Lyceum Address

Granted, he's talking about mobs here, but to me it's essentially the same thing. A mob is really just a group of vigilantes, if you think about it lol. The details of what he's talking about are different, but I think the same spirit applies.

Most vigilantes that I ever heard or read about confuse justice with revenge. There is a difference.
When I was a kid I would be playing in the backyard minding my own business and my cousin would come over and either hit me or kick me. I would retaliate and give him what he gave me. He would go inside and tattle on me for hitting him to his mom, my aunt. I would always tell her the truth, "He started it." I was the only one that got punished. My aunt and my cousin saw that as "Justice", I never did.
People have a remarkable tendency to either ignore facts or investigate, they're either too stupid, too lazy or too emotionally involved to be unbiased. They will take the word of a friend or someone they like over someone telling the truth most of the time. If you like that kind of "justice" you deserve most every crappy thing that happens to you.

With Vigilantes the ends usually justify the means, meaning that regardless of their ruthless methods, they get results worth knowing or benefitting what they need.

Anyone that forces or enforces a rule onto someone else is a self-righteous thug.

Sometimes, Vigilantes are necessary. When they have a good moral code and are actually trying to make the world a better place, I'm all for it.
