I just finished WATAMOTE literally ten min. ago and have looked up Peoples opinions on the ending and lately i see everyone saying that nothing happened or improved or was sad. Well i feel like the opposite. I feel like its a rather happy sort of "alright she can do it if she puts her mind to it" kinda feeling. Look how much she improved since episode one! She can collect up enough courage to talk to people if she wants to and have a somewhat normal conversation when she calms herself. I especially love Episodes 10 and 11 because of the culture club president girl image-san (i think thats how you spell it, excuse me if im wrong) Just love how when she runs into tomoko she thought she was cute and interesting and was being nice to her and dressed up in that costume and gave her that balloon saying to her "your not alone" And how she says at the end when tomoko tried to talk to her but once again got shy "shes cute isnt she? i cant take my eyes off her" which proves that tomoko has people who like her and wants to be her friend! The only thing thats frustrating is that she doesnt take the time to actually notice -_- now when tomoko says "it doesnt really matter" and turns off the screen at the unpopular definition i thought that was an improvement, its like shes telling herself that it doesnt matter what other people think of me, i should just be myself and leave it at that. Whatever happens happens. I just thought i had to get my opinion out there! What about you guys? agree or disagree?

I've just finished rewatching the series and I agree. Her change is bearly noticeable but it's there. If she would've completely gotten over her social problems at the end of this season then there wouldn't be much hope of another season. There are some chapters that anime didn't cover which I'd like to see animated.

WATAMOTE is a great anime, and I love it. And yes, the manga is still going on, in fact, I just picked up volume 6 yesterday. Will there be a second season? There should be, but there could be a second season. The only way a second season could happen is if the sales of the DVD/Bluray and the mangas go well, from what it says from the manga. I really would like a second season of WATAMOTE because so far the manga is great.

The whole show was a waste of time, not just the ending.

I loved the ending.

I don't really care what people say about the anime or its ending. It's a masterpiece anime depicting realism and parody.

Her situation is realistic; not every high schooler can get bunch of friends, y'know? Tomoko was a shy girl, and she became nervous when people started talking to her. She lived in her own world, created a bunch of imaginary scenarios, blamed everybody else for her misfortunes... but she's only got herself to blame.

I thought she was well characterised. I think the storyline might hit too close to home for some otaku, it hit home with me too... but that's why I like the anime even more... why would I hate an anime that represents my life... lol.

____

Most anime, the nerdy/lonely otaku suddenly get a bunch of friends for no reason (looking at you NGNL and SAO) other than because that's how the author wrote the story. But real life doesn't always go like that. Not every loner can get friends that easily... otherwise we wouldn't have loners in the first place... >_>;;

We try... and try to make friends... but we either chicken out... or get.... really uncomfortable in social settings... I can relate to tomoko so much. and that's all that matters. It's a unique anime for me that deserves more praise.

The manga is much better than the show. It's funnier and there's a lot more content and detail. Definitely worth the price. I don't like spending money on manga but this is one is a huge exception.

I enjoy the whole anime. It reminds me of me when I was in school.

I'd like to say that I can relate to her, but I really can't. I can only think that she has some kind of mental disorder. During highschool I too was quite the geek, addicted to MMOs (although it was EverQuest during my time), watched anime all the time, didn't go to parties or anything like that. Regardless though even I had friends, and quite a few of them. I was able to converse normally with members of the opposite sex.

On the other hand though I also did not look down on people while at the same time wanting to be like them. Both Tomoko and Hachiman from Oregairu just have an attitude problem. They care too much about how people perceive them. With Hachiman though instead of trying to appease people, he goes the other direction and tries to push them away out of fear. From what I've seen if you are friendly and rather optimistic, most people will like you. Nobody wants to be around a buzz kill.

Tomoko appears to have "Social Anxiety Disorder." There was some controversy involving a few people who claimed the show made fun of people with that disorder.

The anime doesn't really have an actual ending. The show is only the first part of a broader and more complex story that currently in the manga has continued into Tomoko's 2nd year of high school.
