Today I tried to upgrade my free account to a premium membership. But just as the payment was processing, it resulted in a timeout, and my subscription/payment ended up as pending. It has been several hours already, and still nothing has happened. No money has been drawn from my bank account, however, if I try to purchase membership again now, it stops me after choosing payment method and gives me a message in a red box saying: "You already have a pending or active subscription."

Does anyone else have this issue, or know if there is anything I can do? Any help appreciated

It means the payment proces is marked as 'active' as a safety measure they won't allow you to re-subscribe for a couple of hours. Keep an eye on what happens. Give it about 5 hours (because that seems to be the amount of time it 'normally' flies over). If after this time nothing happend, you should probably contact the site support directly. Don't worry though I am 99% sure this problem fixes itself after a couple of hours.

Hey and thanks for answering me so fast! And that seems reasonable enough, but I forgot to mention that when I check my order history, my order from today isn't listed there, not sure if that is supposed to happen or?

Yes. That is supposed to happen because you didn't check out 'yet'. The system freezes in anticipation of you finishing your order. Once the session expires you can try again.
